One of the overarching goals of the Language Arts department in my school is to foster a love of reading and to empower our students with the reading skills that will help them be more succesful students, as well as open up new worlds of adventure and possibilities for them. To this aim, we start every school day with 15 minutes of reading their chosen indepenent reading books. In addition, as part of their daily homework, they read their book for 30 minutes and write a response, in which they demonstrate one of the skills learned in Language Arts class. Students have had no problem picking enjoyable books for these purposes in their English Language Arts class, as the classroom libraries have a wide selection. However, we have not had enough books in Spanish for students who are new to the country and are in a Spanish Language Arts class. Your donation greatly aleviated this situation.\r\n\r\nWith your donation we were able to choose books at various reading levels, graphic novels, book series, both fiction and non-fiction titles. Some students were very excited to see the full Harry Potter series in Spanish. Others were excited about lower-level books in Spanish such as Captain Underpants and Dork Diaries. All in all they are enjoying exploring the colorful, brand new books. Although they're not GPS watches, the wristwatches with a stopwatch function are still very helpful. They can time how long it takes them to run one lap during our long run course so they can check their pace and level of consistency. Our runners also use timing when they're doing speed training, especially when they're doing goal pace work.
