We were able to have these multilingual conversations about friendship, magic and grief thanks to your donations. \r\n\r\nFor many of my Spanish speaking students, this was the first time they went for a book on their own and read for enjoyment. The books on this donations spoke about the uncodu/immigrant experience and it meant a lot for them to see themselves reflected in literature. \r\n\r\nAs a new year comes, I am now prepared with a strong classroom library. For a lot of these students, test days felt overwhelming, and the pressure to perform well just added to the stress they were already carrying from outside of school. Having something small to hold, like a stress ball or fidget cube, gave them a simple way to calm their nerves. Instead of bouncing their legs or zoning out during an exam, they could squeeze or click their toy and focus more on the test in front of them.\r\n\r\nTeachers noticed a big difference in the vibe of the classroom once the fidget toys were introduced. Students who normally froze up or gave up on tests were able to stay a little more relaxed and confident. It didn't magically take away all the anxiety, but it gave them a sense of control—like, \"Okay, I've got something to help me through this.\" Over time, test days felt less scary, and students started putting in more effort during prep because they didn't dread the exams as much.\r\n\r\nOn top of that, the toys helped create a sense of support in the classroom. Even though the school didn't have a lot of resources, the gesture of giving out fidgets showed students that their feelings and well-being mattered. It opened up space for conversations about stress and anxiety, so kids realized they weren't alone in feeling that way.","fullyFundedDate":1731882623178,"projectUrl":"project/a-take-what-you-need-corner/8687717/","projectTitle":"A Take What You Need Corner!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Marquez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9670596_orig.png?crop=755,755,x139,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724103218209","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9670596"},{"teacherId":9081037,"projectId":8869828,"letterContent":"For many of our students, having snacks available isn't just about satisfying hunger; it's a lifeline. Some may view eating in class as a distraction, but for our students, sharing a meal can be a symbol of comfort and connection. In homes where resources are limited, a simple snack can make a world of difference, not just for their bodies, but for their minds. Nourishment is essential, and when students are well-fed, they are better equipped to engage, learn, and thrive.\r\n\r\nThe multicultural books you've provided are equally vital. They open doors to worlds that many of our students may have never encountered. These stories nurture empathy, inspire dreams, and affirm the diverse backgrounds of our learners. By exposing our students to a variety of narratives, we foster a love for reading that transcends the classroom and encourages them to see themselves as part of a greater story.\r\n\r\nThank you for being a beacon of hope and support. Many of them live in shelters, often lacking even the most basic necessities like underwear, soap, and feminine hygiene products. The impact of these circumstances goes far beyond physical discomfort; it manifests in severe absences, bullying, anxiety, and a crippling lack of focus in the classroom.\r\n\r\nWatching my students struggle against these obstacles breaks my heart. They are already on a difficult journey filled with hurdles, and it's painful to see how their circumstances can overshadow their potential. With your generous support, we managed to bring a little light into their lives this spring. I was able to create care packages for over 150 students and their families, packed with essential items that many take for granted.\r\n\r\nThe look of disbelief on their faces when they received these care packages was unforgettable. It was as if a weight had been lifted, and for the first time, they felt seen and supported. Many expressed profound gratitude, their eyes shining with relief and hope. They began to feel comfortable enough to ask for additional resources for their family members, realizing they weren't alone in this fight. \r\n\r\nEach package represented more than just items; it was a lifeline. It reminded them that there are people who care, and that they deserve dignity and support. When the materials first arrived, the students were absolutely thrilled. There were wide eyes, excited whispers, and even a few cheers—it was like opening presents on a holiday morning!\r\n\r\nWe immediately put the resources to use in a collaborative STEM project where students designed and built model bridges using the new engineering kits. It was incredible to watch them engage in hands-on learning—measuring, problem-solving, and testing their designs with real enthusiasm. One student said, \"This feels like what real engineers do!\" That moment captured exactly why these materials are so meaningful.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're diving into a unit on environmental science, using the new equipment to test water quality samples from our local stream. Students are learning how to collect and analyze data, and they're starting to make connections between what we learn in class and real-world environmental issues.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our classroom has become a more interactive, inspiring place for discovery and learning. My students were able to explore concepts of energy and motion through experiments that they could see, touch, and manipulate. Their excitement was palpable the moment they saw the new resources—there were cheers and high-fives as they eagerly dove into the materials. It was such a rewarding experience to see their curiosity come alive!\r\n\r\nAs for the next steps, we're continuing to build on this momentum. In the coming weeks, students will apply what they learned in the science project to a larger collaborative experiment that integrates math and engineering principles. They will work in teams to design and test their simple machines, and your donation is allowing us to do this with the best tools possible.\r\n\r\nYour support is not just about the materials—it's about giving my students the confidence and resources to explore, create, and learn in ways they never thought possible. It sounds cliche, and that's because it is, for good reason--it's true. Teenagers today have a barrage of inputs and stressors in their lives, some of which they have time to process, others not. All teenagers today were in elementary school or middle school when the lockdown occurred in 2020-2022. It's hard to say if teens are more stressed today because of having lived through that time period or not. What we do know is that teenage anxiety and depression are at an all time high.\r\n\r\nAs a high school social worker, it's my job to give students a safe, non-judgmental space to share their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears. For some that comes naturally, for others it take a bit more time. Receiving the resources for this project has allowed me to give my students tools to deal with their anxiety and stress. The books pictured have helped validate my student's feelings and given them reason to believe that there's hope for living more calm and enjoyable lives.
