From the Expo markers, Dry Erasers, Pencils, pens and Post-its, all of these supplies have had a solid impact as we kick off our fall computer sciences courses.\r\n\r\nIn all of my classes, I have students who need extra support, including manipulatives to help illustrate and reinforce key CS concepts. Many of our lessons are \"unplugged\" and these physical supplies enable student design and creativity in robust ways! My students are regularly designing, building and debugging apps, websites and animated short films in JavaScript and HTML/CSS, and these physical resources are further enabling my students to quickly access information and better understand content. Often before designing an app, animation or game, student groups are required to make prototypes on paper or whiteboards to get their team on the same page prior to the build process and iterative design cycle. The Expo markers and erasers alone help me keep my classes organized and on task through the flow of our daily learning map on the class whiteboard, including Learning Intention, Agenda & Success Criteria. Using a binary converter is one great example of this. Students who have difficulty converting between decimal and binary number systems benefit greatly from the paper device called a flippy do which works very well to help students visualize and work in base 2. This donation has enabled me to better support all of my learners including my students with IEPs and students designated as multilingual learners. On desk word banks and question/sentence starters have been very impactful, and having it printed allows access without taking up screen real estate during a task. Having access to these legos, particularly the small plants and artwork sets, has been a great means of community building in my Advisory! Having a collaborative task that encourages creation in a physical medium has been so fantastic and has helped my advisory group of seniors be able to gel! \r\n\r\nThese Lego sets have also been great for teaching algorithms, sequencing, encapsulation and functions! One lesson I teach in my AP Computer Science curriculum involves establishing the need for programming languages. These legos have been perfect as student groups build a sculpture using Legos, document their process, and then must write corresponding algorithms and directions to rebuild the sculpture. Students then decompose the structure and another group has to rebuild their sculpture using the directions only. \r\n\r\nThis helps students identify the importance of code comments and syntax, general protocols and practices for communicating with computers and other programmers. This enables my students to explain the qualities that differentiate natural languages and programming languages and to justify the existence of programming languages to precisely communicate instructions.\r\n \r\nThis donation has enabled me access to a collaborative, physical medium to connect concepts to the programming space and my students have really benefited from having these Legos to design and create. These Lego sets now enable me to go beyond card sorting algorithms and turtle programming in the tangible realm, and have enhanced my ability with these physical manipulatives to connect with and support all of my learners. \r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for your contribution! In all of my classes, I have students who are pushing themselves beyond the web-based curriculum and are exploring video game design and creation in JavaScript! Having access to this hard drive and extra storage space to enhance the R&D stations in my classroom, has enabled better development via the iterative design process. Multiple student groups come to mind who have benefitted, including a group who recently completed an arcade style two-player game, using keystrokes to move and engage an opponent. The use of collisions in the collide 2D library has really helped these groups create reactive gameplay. Analyzing the story telling techniques of these games has been extremely impactful and pushed my students to craft narratives around their own personal stories for animated short film and video development. Another team in my Intro to Programming class, recently built a score system that has been shared as a library with other students, and the inspiration has come from playing games on this drive. Many groups have identified improvements for their own work products through the use of this hard drive running different professional games across platforms. \r\n\r\nThese enhanced video game research and design stations have enabled my student groups as they design, debug and build to continue to push their process and product as they reach new stages of development and look to improve game play and visuals. Students are learning the key CS concepts in JavaScript including conditionals, arrays, loops, custom functions and object oriented design and are then identifying their use in these professional products. This is also helping give students the language to provide one another feedback and areas for improvement through the peer review process. \r\n\r\nThis donation has enabled me to improve the collaborative programming spaces in my classroom and my students have really benefited from having these materials to map out and design video games and then perform their programming builds. A focus of mine this year has been consolidation of lessons and taking notes. Many of my students have trouble securing even the basic of school supplies, so being able to provide students with notebooks has taken that stress away from their families. I have used the pencils in a slightly different manner. Instead of giving pencils away, I have used them as a reward. Students earn points during the school day for doing various tasks. If they need a pencil on a given day, they may use those points to buy, or rent, a pencil for class. This helps teach them about responsibility and organization.
