When we began our lesson, my students were so excited to talk about what it means to keep a space organized and welcoming. They shared how great it feels to come into a clean environment where they can focus, learn, and grow, setting a wonderfully positive tone for our counseling session.\r\n\r\nTo connect our resources directly to social-emotional learning, our students listened to the read-aloud A Little Spot of Organization by Diane Alber. Following the story, they completed an interactive cut-and-paste sorting activity and shared practical strategies, such as breaking big tasks into manageable sections, sorting items into color-coded bins, and using visual labels. We even discussed other ways to organize, such as organizing our feelings when we might not know how we feel—like using a feelings chart to identify emotions. Additionally, students talked about how keeping things clean prevents clutter, and how donating items in good condition helps others in need while making room for what we keep.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, our next steps involve encouraging students to apply these organization and emotional regulation strategies in school, at home, and in their everyday lives. Through these materials they students have been able to explore and further develop their literacy skills. For example through the fictional texts of Harry Potter, Wild Robot, Bad Guys, etc the students have continued to think about characters, setting, story structure as well as other fictional literary elements. One key area that we have been working on this year is compare and contrast of characters across texts. Through series books like Harry Potter, the students have been able to write essays where they are comparing and contrasting the development and change of characters like Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, through the board games, the students have not only continued to work on their literacy skills but their social skills as well. When working on constructing an elaborate structure in Marble Run, the students are listening to each other's ideas and ending with a structure that they are each proud of.
