Popular series like Dog Man, The Bad Guys, and Cat Kid Comic Club have been especially impactful in motivating students to read more often and with greater enthusiasm.\r\n\r\nIn third grade, students are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. These new books support that shift by helping students strengthen key literacy skills. Through these engaging texts, students practice comprehension by summarizing chapters and identifying themes, build vocabulary through rich and playful language, and improve fluency by rereading books they love. Graphic novels like Dog Man also help students develop the ability to interpret both text and illustrations, an important skill for deeper understanding.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now something students truly look forward to. During independent reading time, students are fully engaged whether they are laughing quietly at a funny scene, discussing books with classmates, or eagerly moving on to the next book in a series. The variety of series allows students to build stamina as they stick with characters and stories over multiple books.\r\n\r\nThese new additions have made a noticeable difference, especially for reluctant readers. Several students who previously struggled to stay focused during reading time are now excited to pick up books, particularly graphic novels like Dog Man. Some have even begun creating their own comics, showing creativity and a deeper connection to what they read. Other students are challenging themselves with longer series, building confidence as they grow as readers.\r\n\r\nYour support has helped create a classroom where reading is joyful, meaningful, and an important part of every student's day.","fullyFundedDate":1760738427482,"projectUrl":"project/book-series/9769603/","projectTitle":"Book Series","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Guevara","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4613753_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1644315011475","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-guevara36"},{"teacherId":4613753,"projectId":9544921,"letterContent":"When this project first came together, I originally planned to use the 10-section cubby as student lockers. However, as my class grew, I realized I needed to adapt. Instead, I turned it into a classroom bookshelf to organize and separate the different book series we use—and it has truly been one of the best decisions for our learning environment.\r\n\r\nNow, my students use the cubby system every day to easily find and return books from their favorite series. It has made independent reading time much smoother and more engaging. One moment that really stood out was during a reading block when students excitedly went straight to \"their\" section, quickly finding the next book in their series without needing help. That sense of ownership and independence has made a big difference.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the organized bookshelf, they were genuinely excited. Many of them immediately gravitated toward familiar series, while others were eager to explore new ones they hadn't noticed before. The clear organization sparked curiosity and encouraged more students to try different books.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are using these organized series to support ongoing reading projects. Students are diving deeper into comprehension activities, making connections across books within a series, and even working on small group discussions based on the stories they're reading. This resource has not only improved access to books but has also strengthened our reading culture and enthusiasm in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping create a space where students feel excited, independent, and motivated to read every day.","fullyFundedDate":1758899266432,"projectUrl":"project/a-place-for-belongings-a-space-for-lear/9544921/","projectTitle":"A Place for Belongings, a Space for Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Guevara","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4613753_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1644315011475","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-guevara36"},{"teacherId":4863626,"projectId":9672883,"letterContent":"Most of my students have very few people in their lives that truly care about them and their academic success. It's more than just a soft place to sit, it's our gathering spot, and our community circle. On the rug, students feel equal and included, sitting shoulder to shoulder, ready to share ideas, listen to one another, and build connections. It creates a sense of belonging that you can't always achieve from desks.\r\n\r\nHaving a separate rug in our SEL (Social Emotional Learning) area adds another layer of comfort and safety. It's where students can go when they need a moment to breathe, reflect, or reset. The SEL rug has quickly become a safe and special place. During a recent group reading activity, one student became overwhelmed and quietly asked if he could sit there. Resting on the rug helped him calm down and refocus, and he was able to return to his group and finish the project. Having that space gives students permission to reset in a healthy way.\r\n\r\nAnd of course, having a vacuum might seem small, but it's a game changer. A clean, fresh space makes the classroom feel cared for and welcoming. My students notice when our room feels tidy, and it helps them take pride in their environment.
