Now, reading looks collaborative, enthusiastic, and sustained. With the new, high interest books, my students are voluntarily reading for much longer periods. They are deeply engrossed in the stories, strengthening their reading stamina as they refuse to put the books down. Furthermore, the DIY Bookmarks and Fabric Markers have turned reading into an active, creative process. Students are designing bookmarks related to the books' themes or characters, which serves as a tactile way to process what they have read and express their comprehension. The book club setup has created pockets of focused, high level conversation where students are leading the discussion about the books' themes, showing ownership over their learning and finding joy in exploring stories together.\r\n\r\nThe new materials have made a world of difference, particularly for a few students who previously struggled with finding the right motivation. A few reluctant readers who resisted traditional chapter books have absolutely fallen in love with The Cat Kid Comic Club. The combination of engaging characters, humor, and the graphic novel format has made reading accessible and fun. One student, who rarely finished a book before, is now constantly referencing the storylines and practicing drawing the characters, demonstrating a huge surge in literacy engagement. Additionally, students working on confidence have naturally gravitated toward The Girl Who Makes a Million Mistakes. Seeing a character struggle, make errors, and still succeed has resonated deeply. During one discussion, a student shared that the book made them feel better about needing to reread a difficult passage, saying, \"It's okay to make a million mistakes as long as you try again.\" Every book you added has been a step toward helping my students become stronger and more enthusiastic lifelong readers. Your support has immediately empowered my PreK-2 students to become active leaders and literacy advocates in our Brooklyn community, addressing the resource gap many local families face. We are utilizing the new materials, especially the Lakeshore Phonics manipulatives and the engaging book sets like the Pigeon Series and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as the foundation for our mobile reading and writing station. A truly heartwarming moment occurred during our first Pop Up when two of my first grade student mentors, using the Snap & Build Phonics kit, patiently helped a four year old learn to sound out the word \"cat.\" The pure joy on both children's faces confirmed the success of this initiative. When the students first saw the materials, their reaction was immediate excitement and a strong sense of ownership; they instantly began planning how to use the colorful books and games to create the most welcoming, hands on learning space possible. These tools have allowed them to turn their passion for reading into real community impact, nurturing the \"heart for helping others\" that I admire most about them.\r\n\r\nWe are just getting started! The next steps for our student leaders are focused on expanding our reach by preparing interactive \"Book Talks\" based on the new library books and integrating the Coogam Short Vowel Games into a new mobile writing station. My students are currently planning new events to schedule at local centers, using the newly acquired materials to guide younger children through fun, engaging literacy activities. By taking the lead on logistics, selection, and instruction, they are not only strengthening their own literacy and leadership skills but also serving as vital role models for other children in our diverse neighborhood. These tools support multiple learning styles and allow students to express themselves creatively while building confidence as young learners.\r\n\r\nThe project has also transformed the overall classroom environment. With access to high-quality supplies and creative centers, my students are more motivated, focused, and eager to participate in learning each day. This has led to stronger social-emotional growth, improved peer relationships, and an increased sense of ownership and pride in classroom work.\r\n\r\nUltimately, Creative Beginnings has helped create a warm, stimulating, and inclusive classroom where every student can thrive. We are already seeing happier, more focused students ready to learn throughout the entire day.\r\n\r\nWe know many of you are knowledgeable about advanced technology, but the tools we received function as essential instructional supports in our school setting. The snacks are a simple yet powerful form of \"brain fuel,\" ensuring no child's concentration is lost to hunger. This directly addresses focus. Our whisper phones are crucial auditory tools that help young readers build phonics awareness and confidence by hearing their own reading clearly. The chair pockets and clipboards are organizational materials that empower students to manage their supplies independently, increasing instructional time and reducing daily frustration.\r\n\r\nWhat has excited the students most is the new reward system featuring the fidget toys, squishies, and rubber ducks! These prizes have created a positive atmosphere and significantly boosted student effort and engagement across all activities. We have noticed particular success among students who benefit from sensory support or structured organization. For instance, some students who struggle with long periods of sitting can now use a quiet fidget toy to channel their energy and maintain attention during lessons. Other students who previously struggled with desk clutter have especially taken to the organizational tools, gaining a sense of control and confidence from their tidy, accessible learning spaces.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has created a supportive and motivating classroom where every child can stay focused, organized, and excited about their education!","fullyFundedDate":1758898958274,"projectUrl":"project/fueling-focus-fun-in-our-first-grade-c/9716283/","projectTitle":"Fueling Focus & Fun in Our First Grade Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Soares","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9766714_orig.jpg?crop=853,853,x0,y230&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759624708216","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/miss-soares"},{"teacherId":8694134,"projectId":9767900,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom has been buzzing with creativity, kindness, and joy all year long! The craft supplies and goodies you provided have become the heart of a special tradition — each month, my students create holiday-themed crafts and assemble cheerful goody bags to share with people in our community.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was watching their faces light up when they first saw the colorful papers, ribbons, stickers, and treats. They immediately began brainstorming who they could surprise — from neighbors and school staff to local seniors. For Valentine's Day, they will make handmade cards with heartfelt messages; for spring, they will craft bright flower decorations; and for fall, they created cozy, warm-toned ornaments. Each bag included a small snack and a note of encouragement, and the smiles we received in return were priceless.\r\n\r\nThese activities have not only strengthened their artistic skills but also deepened their empathy and sense of community. They've learned that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.\r\n\r\nNext, we're working on winter holiday crafts and planning a \"Kindness Countdown\" where students will deliver one small act of cheer each day leading up to the break.
