Flexible seating and sensory input is the driving force to motivating and engaging my students. Teaching students with special needs and learning disabilities has taught me that sitting in a standard desk all day is just not feasible. Flexible seating gives students the option to control their physical environments in which they work best. Through these choices, students gain greater flexibility and control of their surroundings giving them the autonomy and comfort to stay engaged and focused. This allows my students to be engaged in a lesson or task. This leads to higher motivation and academic performance, as well as improved overall behavior. Flexible seating also increases collaboration among my students. Team work allows for more creativity and classroom discussions since students can easily work in pairs or small groups.
