Before my students reach the third grade, they are taught how to tell time. But what they are not taught is that the hour hand moves when the minute hand moves. So they are expecting to see the hour hand directly on the hour at all times. This is not always the case. It is very hard to teach them the concept of telling time, when for years they are taught that way. The gear clock shows them how the hour hand moves as the minute hand moves around the clock. These hand held clocks would be a great visual for all my learners and I really think it will help them master the skill of telling time, which they find so difficult to do. Lastly, because we live in such a digital world, telling time on an analog clock is becoming kind of a thing of the past. In my opinion, it should not be. Telling time is very much an important skill to master at an early age.
