In introducing students to computer science for the first time, I aim to create an environment where everyone can engage fully in a fun and meaningful way. As my students began to learn what it means to debug their code, I told them about the strategy of Rubber Duck Debugging. In essence, this process encourages programmers to talk through their code (out loud) to a friend, pet, or inanimate object (like a rubber duck). While this can seem like a weird thing to do at first, I norm the practice early and incorporate it often into my classroom teaching and learning.\r\n\r\nFast forward to the delivery of this donation, and my students were beyond excited that they got to select their very own rubber duck! Each student chose a duck that spoke to them, and now, they carry their ducks with them and take them out during our more involved programming and debugging lessons. Additionally, the AP Exam has many questions that involve a robot grid, where the robot moves through the grid according to a specific procedure. I took the time to create chart paper size robot grids for my students and encourage them to use their ducks as robots!\r\n\r\nI tell you all of these stories to emphasize how big of an impact a small donation can have on a classroom of curious learners. Thank you, again, for your consideration in supporting my students, some of whom are discovering a passion for Computer Science that will extend well beyond the scope of my class.","fullyFundedDate":1729594217582,"projectUrl":"project/ducks-dough-computer-science-support/8895091/","projectTitle":"Ducks & Dough - Computer Science Supports","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Gillespie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9811711_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x577,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729646190313","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9811711"},{"teacherId":9820140,"projectId":8910188,"letterContent":"The impact this project had on my students and monitors was tremendous and all the students who went out of their way to volunteer, help others, tutor, do peer mediation, conflict resolution, restorative justice, translating for parents and anti bullying campaigns appreciated getting food or desserts. As a school social worker, I have limited funds, and each year, I choose between buying art supplies, sensory toys and activities/games. \r\n\r\nThe generosity of DonorChoose helped to fund a solid supply of activities for engaging students during sessions. Donated games have helped enrich sessions and allowed for students to have a neutral platform to explore their relationship to self and others. Often, students know they \"want to talk\" but are unsure where to start. While I am skilled at initiating conversations, games like \"ungame' and \"strong suit\" provide a natural way for students to initiate conversations about their thoughts, feelings and needs. It takes the pressure off students while giving them space and guidance in how to talk about themselves. \r\n\r\nThese games will be especially impactful in the beginning of each semester, when groups are in their initial phase. During the beginning stages of groups, students are not always familiar with each other. They can be shy, reserved and feel uncomfortable, creating difficulty for sharing and building group dynamics. It is essential to lay the groundwork for students to feel comfortable and safe to build a proper container for a successful group. My plan is to use many of these games during the initial phase so students may create safe spaces to explore difficult topics.","fullyFundedDate":1730124507368,"projectUrl":"project/games-and-sensory-toys/8893570/","projectTitle":"Games and Sensory Toys","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Haley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9810955"},{"teacherId":9830517,"projectId":8929817,"letterContent":"Thank you all so much for your generous donations.
