My students in Brooklyn have proven time after time that young people are intellectually sharp and eager to learn. All of them have forced me to raise my expectations of what young people can accomplish, to teach more rigorously and to ask serious questions. Its has been a privilege to explore complex themes that are embedded in the literature they love, which ranges from the intense works of Richard Wright to the ironic stories of Roald Dahl. The depth and eloquence of their thinking grows as they read, which leads to more powerful writing. My students crave great stories, and I consider it a vital responsibility to supply them with books that will both satisfy and intensify this craving.
