Each week, students are actively engaged in structured gameplay, strategy building, and collaborative learning that strengthens both their academic and social-emotional skills. One particularly meaningful experience made possible through your support was our students' participation in a chess tournament with other middle school students. For many of them, this was their first opportunity to compete outside of our school community. They demonstrated focus, resilience, and outstanding sportsmanship, applying the strategies they practiced during our sessions in a real-world setting. Watching them compete with confidence and pride was a powerful moment for both the students and myself.\r\nWhen students first came together for our sessions, they were especially excited about the snacks we were able to provide. What may seem like a small detail truly made a big difference. The snacks helped create a welcoming and comfortable environment where students felt at ease, eager to stay, and ready to participate. This sense of warmth and community encouraged stronger peer connections, allowing students to build trust and support one another both on and off the chessboard. Once settled, their excitement naturally shifted into the game itself, with students eagerly challenging one another, celebrating victories, and learning from their losses.\r\nAs we move forward, our next steps include continuing to strengthen students' strategic thinking skills and expanding opportunities for competitive play. We are preparing for additional tournaments and working toward developing student leaders within the group who can mentor their peers. Beyond gameplay, we are also connecting chess to lessons in problem-solving, decision-making, and perseverance—skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Students are setting personal goals, reflecting on their progress, and taking increasing ownership of their learning.\r\nBecause of your generosity, Chess Kings and Queens has become more than just a club—it is a space where students feel confident, connected, and inspired. The cleaning supplies you helped fund have made a huge difference in maintaining our laptops, Chromebooks, and styluses. My students use these tools daily for lessons, research, and independent practice, so keeping them sanitized and functional has been a real game-changer.\r\n\r\nBefore this project, we often had devices that were sticky, dusty, or had unresponsive touch screens, which caused distractions and wasted class time. Now, students take pride in maintaining their materials — wiping down keyboards and screens after use, and making sure our shared styluses stay clean and ready for the next person. It's also been a great way to teach responsibility and care for shared equipment.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been seeing students remind each other to clean their devices before packing up — they've really taken ownership of this process. It might seem small, but this project helped us build better classroom habits and extend the life of our technology.
