When I announced we would be building model cars that would be powered by the sun, my students eyes completely lit up, and when we filled the hallway with trebuchets launching projectiles there was a joy that filled the entire second floor.\r\n\r\nProjectile motion is a conceptually rigorous and technically challenging concept that requires a knowledge of trigonometry and a crystal clear working model of velocity as a vector. Without a few hours of deep observation and data collection trying to understand the different factors that influence the motion of a projectile, I know my students would have found this concept inaccessible. Instead, students were eager to learn about the unit circle so they could make predictions regarding the horizontal and vertical components of velocity, they were emboldened to use kinematic equations to solve for unknown variables, and they were deeply proud when they showed off the depth of their knowledge in their round tables this week.\r\n\r\nThe solar powered car build inspired deep research into alternative energy and ignited a well of curiosity regarding the pros and cons of where we source our power. Students were impressed with how fast the cars could move with only voltage provided by the sun, and were inspired to research innovative ways we might store this energy. Expect another project regarding batteries of different designs!","fullyFundedDate":1760652036663,"projectUrl":"project/physics-round-table-projects/9769360/","projectTitle":"Physics Round Table Projects!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Charles","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10291900"},{"teacherId":9574065,"projectId":9559311,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating to this project. The American Horror course was such a hit! We use technology in many ways: Webquests, watching historical videos that connect to our lesson, and the also students with IEPs often like to listen to recordings we make of the directions. \r\nHaving noise cancelling headphones as well as speakers, allows us to control the volume in our classroom and allow our students the best access to the materials we are trying to teach. It is not uncommon in public schools for equipement to break or die, and there are not appropriate plans or resources to replace them. This means making sacrifices in how we plan.\r\nYour gift will allow us to plan lessons that engage and bring historical issues to life alongside the literature we read. Instead of talking about The Freedom Rides, students can now actually watch footage with high quality sound to help them understand what they were actually like. \r\n\r\nIn private schools, teachers and students want for nothing. Between PTA's and parents who give a lot of money, they don't worry about the basics. As public school teachers, nothing is promised or guaranteed in our classrooms. Thank you for giving us peace of mind that we can teach in the best way our kids need, not based on what we \"don't have\".","fullyFundedDate":1758899163998,"projectUrl":"project/amazing-students-deserve-up-to-date-tech/9725514/","projectTitle":"Amazing Students Deserve up to Date Technology Resources!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. p.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp231696_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1453761610163","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/231696"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_24016","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":366,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":28,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":57.5,"schoolId":24016,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Essex Street Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Essex Street Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/essex-street-acad/24016"}
