It's a rarity in NYC schools for students to be able to keep the books that they use in class and such an awesome privilege to be able to give these students the gift of a personally annotated work of Shakespeare that they can keep forever! Should any become inspired to study literature or drama or (gasp) teaching English, they'll have a solid foundation of notes ready to go. How amazing!\r\n\r\nFrom a teaching/logistical standpoint, this gift is one of peace of mind and respite from our copy room. I am thrilled to be able to spend my time planning exciting lessons and working with our teaching artist from Lincoln Center and NOT cutting and pasting and running copies of specific scenes. This will be particularly helpful when our teaching artist helps us choose and act out certain scenes as a final project. Rather than make and staple different packets for each group (and pray that I made the right amount and stapled them in the right order), the entire text will be at each group's disposal. The iPad has transformed the way students collect and analyze data. With the Apple Pencil, they can document both quantitative and qualitative observations with precision and speed. None of the students were familiar with The Power so it was a refreshing experience for the students to experience the book as a collective. Our discussions regarding the various plot points and characters were lively and passionate. We thoroughly enjoyed discussing how the various women characters reacted and evolved across the novel's length. \r\n\r\nBecause the book was read independently for an after school club, the stigma of it being \"a boring book my teacher assigned\" was not present and thus it created a more free flowing discussion. Even without requiring students to annotate the Power, we still came in with sticky notes peeking from in between the pages to highlight passages worth discussing.\r\n\r\nUpon returning from summer, various club members let me know they thought about the book a handful of times over the summer while reading, which I appreciate because I initially proposed the book as an option for the club to read. The Power was certainly a nice way for the club to culminate their school year.
