About 20 years ago, a teacher by the name of Cheryl Isreal passed suddenly. Our school, Bayview Avenue School of Arts and Sciences, set aside a section near the back door in rememberance of her. Ten years ago, a classroom teacher, built 4 garden boxes and decorations in the reserved area to honor her life's work in engaging students to reach beyond their school walls. Seven years ago, a custodian built numerous custom benches for our students and four years ago our school-based science facilitator planted tulip bulbs that bloom yearly. \r\nIt has always been on my mind to engage the students with their surroundings. The garden is the perfect spot. The students were overjoyed to participate in outdoor gardening. We used the soil immediately to start our seeds indoors. The students were amazed at how seeds actually become a plant. Once we planted our starters in the 2 beds, we laid down our soaker hose. Lucky for us, there is an outdoor water line for us to use. We planted in May and we watched some growth. I would pass by the garden during the summer and look for growth. It was a slow start. Unfortunately, I did not put up a sign and our district landscapers unknowingly cleaned up all the beds along with the students' plants. I tried to restart since I had a few bags left over but the summer sun was not enough. I am inspired to start again and watch the students gasp in awe at nature.\r\n\r\nAgain, a heartfelt thanks for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1779289842088,"projectUrl":"project/pumpkins-and-sunflowers/10297642/","projectTitle":"Pumpkins and Sunflowers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mason","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10515220"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_21552","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":510,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":88,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":75,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":1,"gradesServed":"K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"11.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":82.8,"schoolId":21552,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bayview Avenue School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bayview Avenue School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/freeport-public-school-district/bayview-avenue-school/21552"}
