Because of your generosity, my students now have earbuds that allow them to access audio while learning, and the impact has been immediate and meaningful.\r\n\r\nWith these earbuds, students are able to listen to audiobooks during independent reading time. For many of my learners—especially English Language Learners and students with learning differences—hearing the words read aloud while following along in the text is incredibly powerful. Audio support helps students hear correct pronunciation, understand sentence structure, and build vocabulary in a way that printed text alone cannot always provide.\r\n\r\nFor English Language Learners, listening to fluent reading helps bridge the gap between spoken and written English. Students are able to connect what they hear with what they see on the page, strengthening both comprehension and language development. Many of these students feel more confident participating in class discussions because they better understand the stories they read.\r\n\r\nStudents with reading challenges also benefit greatly. The audio allows them to access grade-level stories without feeling frustrated or left behind. They can focus on meaning, characters, and ideas rather than struggling with every word. This helps build confidence, independence, and a genuine love of reading.\r\n\r\nThe earbuds are also supporting learning across digital platforms. Students now use them while working in programs such as First in Math, Lexia, and Freckle, where audio directions and supports help guide them through activities independently. Additionally, the earbuds make it possible for students to participate fully in virtual learning and instructional videos on snow days and other remote learning situations.\r\n\r\nSomething as simple as a pair of earbuds has opened doors for my students—helping them listen, learn, and engage in ways that were not previously possible in a shared classroom environment.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has created a more inclusive learning space where every child has the opportunity to access reading, technology, and instruction in a way that works best for them. We started out with completing a KWL chart on plants. Next, we explored the different parts of a plant, and the process through which they grow via videos and reading passages. Then, we explored the tools and equipment necessary to plant properly and safely. Through videos and photos, we explored the multitude of tools used by gardeners as well as safety measures they take when planting. \r\n\r\n We finally reached the point where we launched our first planting experiment with the radish seeds. They were so excited to see earthworms slithering through and nourishing the soil. In our 5th grade class, they were studying ecosystems in our ARC curriculum; the teachers made the connection to decomposers balancing the ecosystems. In the 4th grade, they were studying animals for their previous unit of study and learning about the spreading of seeds through animals and germination was a great connection as well. We used the planting toolkit to bring realia into instruction in our class. Students were so surprised to see that these tools(shovel, trowel, sprayer, gloves, etc.) were real and to see how large, sturdy, and useful they are. Bringing the tools into our classroom made planning come alive for many of them who had never seen these tools but had engaged in gardening or planting in the past. Also, for those who shared they couldn't afford these types of tools, it made it possible to have access to and the ability to use them. \r\n\r\n In summary, having just completed phase 1 of our SPROUTS project with the introduction to plants and planting, I see our ENL students grades 3 through 6 as captivated, appreciative, and embracing of the content and their engagement with each other. I have had students bring in art work, share past experiences of farms back home, and express their zest for learning, growing and sharing their learning both in and out of our project meeting dates. Above all, our Jaguars have found language that they can use with each other and with their families back home.
