Because of you, my students now have access to a wide variety of engaging and meaningful materials that have already made a tremendous difference in our speech and language sessions. From the moment the boxes arrived, the excitement on my students' faces was unforgettable—eyes lit up as they explored the magnetic tiles, play food, and sensory bins. These items have sparked more spontaneous language, social interaction, and creativity than I've seen all year. The vocabulary flash cards and ASL communication cards have been especially helpful in building expressive and receptive language skills, while the books have become instant favorites for literacy-based therapy sessions.\r\n\r\nThe practical items like the chargers for AAC devices, portable battery pack, storage bins, and Lysol wipes have helped make our space more organized, efficient, and safe, which is so important when working with students who have complex communication needs. The Play-Doh tools and sensory materials have also provided calming, hands-on opportunities for language-rich play, helping my students feel regulated and ready to learn. Your kindness has brought new energy and joy into our therapy room, and I can't thank you enough for giving my students the tools they need to grow, connect, and communicate.","fullyFundedDate":1736857291173,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-essentials/9037470/","projectTitle":"Classroom Essentials!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nancy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9848765_orig.png?crop=1211,1211,x143,y9&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732648500625","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/speechwithmrsnancy"},{"teacherId":9848765,"projectId":8969997,"letterContent":"The calming corner has been a big hit with my students! I have seen a lot of improvement in their self-regulation and motivation during speech sessions. Prior to assembling our calming corner, students explored different feelings during a book study of \"The Color Monster\". Throughout the story, students had the opportunity to explore what the different feelings are and what they look and feel like. We also discussed times when the students may have experienced the different feelings shown throughout the text. During our feelings study, I created an interactive \"feelings chart\" where students are able to come in and place their picture under the feeling they are experiencing when entering the speech room. This study helped students identify their feelings, but we also needed to explore ways to regulate our feelings. This is where the calming corner comes in!\r\n\r\nAlmost every students entered my room and immediately went over to or asked about our new calming corner. They were very intrigued and wanted to explore. When introducing the calming corner to students for the first time, we started by first exploring the area and everything in it. Students were each given time to look through, touch, and use the different materials and items in the calming corner at their own pace. Students have particularly enjoyed feeling the textured sensory mats, squeezing the vibrating pillow that mimics a heart beat, and tapping the color changing lights into different patterns or to get them all to one matching color. We then talked about what the calming corner was for and I explained to students that it is available any time they may feel like they need a break. I also encourage students to utilize the area when they are struggling to regulate and may not be able to request a break on their own. Many visuals have been included to help students, both speaking and non-speaking, understand when they may need to utilize the calming corner and how to request a break. The timers have been particularly helpful in transitioning back to our activity. Students are able to choose a 3, 5, or 7 minute break depending on how escalated they are. This has helped with self regulation, smooth transitioning, and fostering independence.\r\n\r\nOverall, I have seen a huge change in my students. The calming area has given my students opportunities to explore their feelings, express their needs, and regular their emotions. The calming corner has supported my students' ability to sit and attend to activities for longer periods of time and there has been a noticeable increase in students' attention. Young children have difficulty regulating their bodies and emotions - this is even more difficult for students on the spectrum. The calming corner has empowered my students and given them an extra tool to learn skills that are already so much harder for them to master. I am very grateful for the impact that the calming corner has had on my students - an impact larger than I ever could have expected- and I know my students are just as grateful (and excited) to have a safe space in the speech room.","fullyFundedDate":1733252900307,"projectUrl":"project/calming-corner/8969997/","projectTitle":"Calming Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nancy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9848765_orig.png?crop=1211,1211,x143,y9&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732648500625","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/speechwithmrsnancy"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_102131","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":89,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":28,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"US Census Data for the surrounding geographic area","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"Census ZCTA","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":90.2,"schoolId":102131,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about P369k @ 56 on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"P369k @ 56","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/district-75-city-wide-programs/p369k-56/102131"}
