Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and some are currently living in shelters, where access to books at home is limited or inconsistent. Because of this, these books are not simply an addition to our classroom—they are an essential part of how my students experience literacy. For many of them, this is their primary exposure to books, making it critical that the materials are engaging, accessible, and designed to meet their unique learning needs.\r\nThese books are especially meaningful because they meet my students where they are developmentally. The sturdy board pages allow students with fine motor challenges to independently turn pages without frustration or fear of tearing them. This independence builds confidence and encourages repeated interaction with books. When students feel successful, they are more likely to stay engaged and develop a positive connection with reading.\r\nThe sound features have significantly increased student engagement and motivation. The immediate sensory feedback captures attention and helps sustain it, which can be challenging for many of my learners. These books provide a multisensory experience by combining visual, auditory, and tactile input. Hearing sounds that match pictures reinforces understanding and supports language development. For students who are minimally verbal or still developing expressive communication, these sounds often prompt imitation, vocalization, and increased interaction—key steps in building communication skills.\r\nThe skills introduced through these books go far beyond basic reading. Students are developing foundational communication skills such as requesting (manding), labeling (tacting), and making choices. For example, a student may request a specific book, press a sound button, and attempt to label what they hear or see. These small but meaningful interactions reflect real progress in communication. The books also support joint attention, as students learn to share an experience with a teacher or peer by focusing on the same page, sound, or activity.\r\nIn addition, these books help build important cognitive and readiness skills. The sound buttons teach cause-and-effect relationships, helping students understand that their actions produce outcomes. Students are also strengthening listening skills, expanding vocabulary, and developing early comprehension. Over time, many begin to anticipate familiar sounds, recognize patterns, and respond to simple questions—important foundations for literacy.\r\nReading in our classroom looks different from a traditional setting, but it is highly intentional and interactive. It is structured and individualized to meet each student's needs. Some students sit with a teacher and actively engage by pressing buttons, pointing to pictures, or using communication systems to request or label. Others participate for shorter periods, gradually building their attention and tolerance. We embed verbal behavior strategies throughout reading, prompting communication and reinforcing all attempts. Every reading experience becomes an opportunity to build language, connection, and independence.\r\nSeveral students are especially benefiting from these books. Some of my minimally verbal students are now independently activating sound buttons and then looking to an adult, smiling, or attempting to imitate the sounds. These moments show increased engagement, communication, and social connection. Other students are demonstrating longer attention spans and are choosing to engage with books more often. One student has even begun bringing books to staff and requesting \"read,\" which we had not seen before. This reflects both growth in communication and a developing interest in literacy.\r\nOverall, these board books with sound have made reading more accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all of my students. They are helping to build essential communication, social, cognitive, and early literacy skills in a way that is joyful and motivating. Most importantly, they are giving my students the opportunity to experience success and develop a love for learning.\r\nTo everyone who generously supported and funded this project, thank you. Your kindness has already had a meaningful and lasting impact on my students' growth and learning.
