When the rug was first rolled out, the excitement from my students was truly heart warming. They got to vote on where in the room they wanted to put it so it helped empower them to be the creators of their own learning environment. Students absolutely loved seeing all the fun colors and the smiles on the rug matched the smiles on my kids faces! Many students jumped right into exploring the rug or playing on it. I even had one who plopped right down and started making an imaginary snow angel on it! They were like kids when they visit a new house they might purchase, picking out their spots and where they would want to sit on the new carpet. They love going to their specials and telling their specials teachers how cool it is that they got a new rug and that they feel so special which is so awesome to see. The rug instantly transformed the space into one that is more calming, warmer, and more intentionally designed for them rather than the all black carpet that was there before. From the very first day, the rug helped create a sense of connectedness, shared joy and ownership, and helps make kids feel more in tune to the room they're in for a majority of their day and school year. The unifix cubes will help students conceptual understand carrying and borrowing across place value. Having the ability to physically break apart and shift tens and hundreds will be a game changer for our students. We are also able to dive into the interesting world of Penguins who live in the arctic regions of the world and learn more about them.
