Students could take their copies of the text home, which freed up class time to dive deeper into the text than we could for school sets of books. Students were amazed at the rich language, culture, and history presented in Oscar Wao, finding Diaz's realism at one approachable and elevated. Oscar Wao also opened the door to discuss social issues we see in the world today such as political violence.\r\n\r\nOur school has a limited number of texts available to students and, as an older school, many of those texts are considered dated. Reading a text that's not only more recent, but also award-winning, helped my students understand the many forms literature can take. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao features a unique narrative structure, using footnotes to include historical context with which the reader may be unfamiliar; exposing students to different narrative styles helps them to develop a rich and varied understanding of literature and its infinite forms.\r\n\r\nOscar Wao has also provided great influence in my students' written work. Due to Diaz's skillful use of syntax and diction, many of my students have become better writers, incorporating some of Diaz's style into their own writing. These new skills would have never been possible if it weren't for your donation. \r\n\r\nReading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao helped my students to see themselves in a text for the first time. Throughout the novel, students are exposed to the history of the Dominican Republic under the dictator, Rafael Trujillo. Many of my students come from immigrant backgrounds, fleeing their homes to find a better life; finding a protagonist whose home country experienced similar turmoil really resonated with my class. Oscar Wao helped my students grow as scholars while remaining true to their roots-- a worthwhile endeavor, and a rousing success for both myself and my class.","fullyFundedDate":1762980813631,"projectUrl":"project/the-brief-wondrous-life-of-sophomore-yea/9800828/","projectTitle":"The Brief Wondrous Life of Sophomore Year","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. J","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10305022"},{"teacherId":10396028,"projectId":9980713,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for all of the amazing help you gave my students. The snacks that you provided for my class allowed my students to focus and get their projects completed. After the holidays, I found out many of my students are currently homeless. This gave them some hope and a feeling (though temporary) feeling of safety. The project that they were working was tiny homes that could be set up for off - grid living. This included having to project and figure power supply and usage, nutritional supplies including caloric needs, and water supply. This helped with their ability to work and focus when they would otherwise be worried about when they might get their next meal.\r\n\r\nThe Reaction that they gave me when they noticed the boxes of snacks was absolutely priceless. I want to thank all of the donors to give us the materials needed so we can have the best exhibition possible for the start up competition in 2026. I really took this project seriously because I want to own my own auto detailing business. Now I know to learn by working in this field for at least a year, pay attention to what works and doesn't, then find the CARG of the current leaders in the field. \r\n\r\nThe actual competition was a great experience for me to explain important economic concepts and specifics like my target customer, my repeat customer, the neighborhood dynamics, and possible supply and demand shifts that could occur, and what solutions I have to solve each specif problem. I love learning this way because worksheets and packets are my nemesis. \r\n\r\nI really love the trophies and the tri-folds. The new cardboard cutting tools have completely transformed how we approach 3D design in the classroom. We recently used the ChompSaw during a cardboard sculpture project in which students designed and built original structures ranging from architectural models to wearable art. Instead of struggling with dull scissors and uneven cuts, students were able to make precise, clean shapes that helped their ideas look more polished and intentional. The improved accuracy gave them the confidence to attempt more complex builds and think more like real designers and makers.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue building on these skills through larger cardboard engineering challenges and collaborative sculpture projects. We are beginning to explore more advanced concepts like structural stability, joinery techniques, and functional design. Your support has opened the door to deeper creativity, stronger craftsmanship, and more meaningful hands-on learning. Thank you for giving my students the tools to turn imagination into reality.","fullyFundedDate":1763491193522,"projectUrl":"project/precision-cuts-limitless-creativity/9735563/","projectTitle":"Precision Cuts, Limitless Creativity","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. G.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3093947_orig.jpg?crop=1440,1440,x0,y211&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1619671242002","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/gaillard"},{"teacherId":3093947,"projectId":9093106,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, my students are now fully immersed in the world of printmaking! The new printmaking plates have transformed our classroom into a vibrant studio space filled with experimentation and discovery. We recently completed a relief printmaking project using the new print blocks, where students designed and carved their own images and then printed multiple copies. Watching them slow down, plan their compositions, and carefully transfer their designs into prints was incredibly rewarding. The hands-on process helped them truly understand texture, positive and negative space, and how artists think through layers.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, there was genuine excitement in the room. Students gathered around as I unpacked the print blocks and immediately started asking when they could use them. Many had never worked with real printmaking tools before, and having access to these materials made them feel like professional artists. Their confidence grew with each print they pulled, especially when they saw how their carved designs transformed into bold, repeatable images.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue building their printmaking skills by refining their techniques and experimenting with more complex designs and layered prints. They are beginning to understand how artists develop ideas through repetition, revision, and craftsmanship. Your support has given them access to materials that inspire creativity, patience, and pride in their work.
