We have now played each of the new games several times, and the students absolutely love them. In addition, they are making gains as readers! The causal and fun nature of reading for the sake of a game makes a task, that is often painfully difficult for some of my students, enjoyable and worth the effort. They are able to find success in reading brief but appropriately challenging pieces of text that provide instant reward, whether it be a funny scenario, added points, or advancement in the game. \r\n\r\nI hope to slowly but surely transfer that risk and reward feeling to reading books.","fullyFundedDate":1768440633268,"projectUrl":"project/rulebook-readers/10005350/","projectTitle":"Rulebook Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. O'Connell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1980976_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1450307939336","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1980976"},{"teacherId":10303362,"projectId":9796429,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for allowing my students the opportunity to see the birds of our school up close. I taught about birds with my 6th grade class, and having pictures was indispensable for helping them to learn bird ID. All of my students can now identify a house finch by just a quick glimpse, and this makes me so happy!\r\n\r\nWe've seen white winged doves, red winged blackbirds, house finches, house sparrows, mourning doves, curve billed thrashers, juncos and more. I'm hoping that when the migration season happens this spring I'll get to teach a whole new crop of birds. \r\n\r\nI've scheduled the local Audubon society next month to give a talk to the Outdoors Club and I know that having these visual aides will be very helpful for engaging an even larger group of students, since it is difficult to find all of the species that visit the bird feeder in the quiet hours when students are away from school. \r\n\r\nI'll continue to use the Birdfy camera for an upcoming ecology unit, and I hope to be able to engage my students using the Birdfy camera for years to come. Headphones might not be the most exciting school supply, but you have no idea what a difference they make. \r\n\r\nFirstly, my students can now clearly hear subtle accents on words like object or record. This is huge because accent placement may change the meaning, and that is really tricky of you are an English learner or a struggling reader. \r\n\r\nSecondly, the use of headphones encourages a calmer, more focused learning environment. Without the headphones we were trying our best to keep each computer's volume high enough to hear, but not so high as to disrupt others. It was a never ending challenge of adjustments. \r\n\r\nThank you.
