My students learn best through visual supports, repetition, routine, and concrete modeling, and these books are uniquely suited to meet those needs. The simple text, bold illustrations, and predictable story patterns allow students to participate in literacy activities in ways that are developmentally appropriate and supportive of their communication needs.\r\n\r\nAlthough my students are nonverbal and do not engage in traditional discussions, they are still active learners. During read-alouds, students will engage by attending to the illustrations, tracking the story visually, pointing, using gestures, picture symbols, or AAC devices, and responding through movement or facial expressions. The repetitive phrases and consistent structure of Pete the Cat stories help students anticipate what comes next, increasing attention, engagement, and comprehension without requiring verbal responses.\r\n\r\nThese books will also support early literacy skills such as print awareness, listening skills, and visual discrimination. Students will practice turning pages, identifying familiar characters, matching pictures, and recognizing repeated words or symbols. For many students, this repeated exposure builds confidence and comfort with books, which is an essential step in developing lifelong literacy skills. The predictable rhythm of the stories helps reduce anxiety and supports sustained attention, especially for students who struggle with sensory processing or transitions.\r\n\r\nIn addition to literacy development, the Pete the Cat books provide important social-emotional modeling through visuals and simple narratives. Pete's calm demeanor and consistent reactions offer clear, concrete examples of emotional regulation and coping with everyday situations. Even without verbal discussion, students can learn through observation and imitation. These stories will be paired with visuals, emotion icons, and modeling to help students connect the character's actions with appropriate responses in real-life situations.\r\n\r\nThe books will also be used as part of daily routines to support regulation and structure. Reading a familiar Pete the Cat story can help students transition between activities, calm their bodies, and prepare for learning. Consistency is especially important for students with severe autism, and having reliable, high-interest books available helps create a safe and predictable classroom environment.\r\n\r\nOverall, this project will impact my students by making literacy accessible, meaningful, and enjoyable. The Pete the Cat books will support engagement, regulation, and early communication skills in a way that respects each student's abilities and needs. Thanks to donor support, my students will have books that meet them where they are and help them experience success in learning every day.","fullyFundedDate":1760749809282,"projectUrl":"project/groovin-and-learnin-with-pete-the-cat/9615596/","projectTitle":"Groovin' and Learnin' with Pete the Cat","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ashley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9069585_orig.jpg?crop=363,363,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1689264657503","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ashley-baca"},{"teacherId":9069585,"projectId":9337692,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity and support of our classroom. Because of you, my students now have access to tools that will make a meaningful difference in their daily learning experience. Your kindness has directly impacted a group of bright, curious, and creative students with autism who thrive when their sensory needs are understood and supported.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, regulation is the foundation for learning. Many of my students experience the world in a heightened sensory way, and traditional classroom expectations can be overwhelming without the right supports in place. Thanks to your donations, we are able to create an active sensory corner that allows students to regulate their bodies before returning to academic tasks feeling calm, focused, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThe stationary bike has already become a favorite resource for students who need a safe and structured outlet for movement. Instead of feeling restless or overwhelmed, they now have a purposeful way to release energy and reset their focus. The yoga balls provide flexible seating options that promote balance, body awareness, and sustained attention, helping students remain engaged during instruction. The spinning chair supports vestibular sensory needs and offers a calming experience for students who seek movement, reducing anxiety and sensory overload.\r\n\r\nWhat makes these tools especially powerful is the sense of independence they give my students. They are learning to recognize their own needs and choose appropriate strategies to help themselves regulate. This builds self-awareness, confidence, and self-advocacy skills that will benefit them far beyond our classroom. Rather than feeling frustrated or discouraged, students feel empowered and successful.\r\n\r\nYour support has also helped create a more positive and productive classroom environment overall. With improved regulation, we see fewer behavioral challenges, smoother transitions, and more meaningful learning time. Most importantly, students feel safe, understood, and valued. They are more willing to take academic risks, build relationships, and fully participate in their education.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students and for investing in their growth. Your generosity has made a lasting impact, and it means more to our classroom community than words can fully express. We are incredibly grateful for your support and for the difference you have made in the lives of our students.","fullyFundedDate":1747342249187,"projectUrl":"project/regulation-before-expectation/9337692/","projectTitle":"Regulation Before Expectation","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ashley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9069585_orig.jpg?crop=363,363,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1689264657503","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ashley-baca"},{"teacherId":10108930,"projectId":9528773,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous support of our classroom snack project. The snacks you provided, Cheez-Its, Goldfish, and Animal Crackers are now incorporated into our daily routine and have already had a positive impact on student engagement. During extended learning blocks, particularly literacy and math rotations, these snacks help students maintain focus and stamina. A recent example occurred during a multi-step literacy activity: after a brief snack break, students were able to return to their work with improved attention and readiness to participate.\r\n\r\n For several students who do not always arrive with food from home, this resource has supported a more equitable learning environment and reduced disruptions caused by hunger or fatigue.\r\n\r\nAs we continue with our current units, these snacks will remain an important tool in supporting student focus, participation, and overall classroom readiness. Your contribution has directly enhanced our learning environment and allowed us to meet a basic need that strengthens academic success.
