All our students were super excited to fly their kites. Majority of them did go airborne! We flew them after Spring Break when the wind was just right, and the students had a blast, even the ones that couldn't get their kites to go up. \r\n\r\nThis was such a fun activity to learn how 3D objects can be built and used in the real world, we built them before Spring Break and flew them right after. Student attendance and engagement in my classroom was positively great! Though the building process didn't excite the students too much (it involved a lot of tedious knots to tie and straws to count), the reward of flying their kites and being able to take them home to their families after was worth the effort they put into them. Students endured and their patience was rewarded. I wanted to tell you not just that the kids love it (they do), but what it's actually teaching them.\r\n\r\nScythe imagines a future where humanity has conquered death through genetic engineering and nanotechnology, which means it drops students right into the biology I want them thinking hard about. We use it as the spine for a unit that sits alongside our GMO debate and CRISPR project: what happens when a species gets to edit its own mortality? Kids have to reason through real bioethical questions: who decides who lives, who dies, and by what standard, using the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning framework we build all year. It's the same framework they use in the lab when they're arguing about a genetically modified crop, except now the stakes in the story are personal and dramatic enough that even my most reluctant readers are building arguments without realizing it's \"science class.\" The book's world also functions as a working ecosystem managed by an AI (the Thunderhead), so it opens the door to talking about population dynamics, resource limits, and what \"engineering\" an ecology even means themes that carry straight into our evolution and ecology units later in the year.\r\n\r\nReading in my room with this book doesn't look like silent rows with noses in pages. We read key chapters together and stop constantly; kids turn and argue with a shoulder partner about whether a character's choice was ethical, we chart competing value systems on the board, and small groups debate specific \"gleaning\" scenarios the way a scythe character would have to. A few of my students who normally coast through required reading have become the ones pushing discussion the furthest, because the moral puzzles in the book don't have a clean textbook answer — they have to build and defend their own position, and that's exactly the kind of thinking I want a scientist to practice. The intention was to use them with my senior AVID students to help as they transition from high school to college. I most certainly believe that this book is the foremost \"guide\" that can be used for that objective.\r\n\r\nUnfortauntely, I have hit an unexpected snag in my use of this book. I've had several of my parents object to two chapters in particular: the chapter on alcohol and, especially, the chapter on sex. My district required me to do permission slips for this book because of those two chapters even though I could have easily skipped those two. The result of this request for isnged parent permission slips is that unless EVERYONE turned in a slip, NO ONE would be allowed to read the book. So, the books sit in my classroom unopened because of the objection of a few parents. Let me be clear, I do not hold any animosity towards these families or my district for requiring the permission to read this book. In these hard times, I expected it. What I did not expect was parents objecting. Again, I completely understand their objections.\r\n\r\nFinally, I am still hopeful that I wil be ableto use the book in some way shape or form before the seniors complete their time at our school. If not this year, I itend to use the books in the coming years. Again, I apologize for this unexpected turn of events. The new printer has made a meaningful difference in how my students learn and engage with their work. Many of my students struggle with reading, writing, and fine-motor skills, so using creative apps on their Chromebooks helps them express their ideas more easily. They can design posters, draw digitally, and complete art activities with support from our program staff by giving them another pathway to show what they know.\r\n\r\nWhat excites them most about the new printer is seeing their digital creations turn into real, printed artwork. For many of my students, holding their printed Growth Mindset posters, drawings, and craft projects gave them a huge sense of pride. Seeing their work displayed on our classroom walls has boosted their confidence and motivation to keep creating.\r\n\r\nOne student who usually hesitates to participate in class projects became eager to design her own poster once she saw her classmates' printed artwork. Other students who struggle with writing found success using drawing apps, allowing them to create detailed art that he was thrilled to print and show others. These small but powerful moments of success have helped them feel valued, capable, and excited to learn.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has brought creativity, independence, and joy into our classroom.
