Many students have joined the mariachi class because they may have tried other traditional ensembles and not been successful. Some students are attracted to pursuing music that will connect them with other generations. Other students are just curious about mariachi music and their own cultural identity. Students will be learning about how unique Mariachi music is as a fusion of Spanish, indigenous, and African styles. The lessons they learn can often be beyond music experiences and skills. They will learn about being bicultural. They will learn a specialized music outside traditional classical music. They will learn to open their worldview. This can be empowering. For whatever reason students have registered, the mariachi program is giving more students the opportunity to learn and perform in a music ensemble and is giving more entry level music experience in high school. All we need now is instruments!
