In kindergarten it is essential to begin with a strong foundation on letters and sounds to promote encoding and decoding of words. Students in my classroom have been working hard to recognize letters, sounds and map and blend CVC words. During whole group instruction we use Elkonin boxes to tap, map and write both CVC words and our Heart Words-irregular words that have a tricky sound they need to remember by *heart*. \r\nNow with the generous donations from this project we are able to apply these skills into reading books that are made for early readers that are decodable and no longer just follow a predictable pattern of text. Students can now decode words and read fun age-appropriate stories for young learners.\r\n\r\nThrough donations I was able to get multiple sets of decodable books as well as take home book sacks for students. Students work with me during Reading Center time, and we read books, and they then get to take them home to share with their families for additional practice!
