This year, they played a central role in a very special event we hosted: our first-ever Accessibility Fair, held on June 18, 2025.\r\n\r\nThis event provided students the opportunity to demonstrate critical skills we've been developing throughout the school year, including turn-taking, switch activation and hold down a switch for 5 seconds, visual tracking, and peer interaction. For many of our students, it was the first time they were able to engage in age-appropriate activities supported by adaptive tools that met their unique needs.\r\n\r\nOne of the most memorable moments was a ball toss station. Students used a leaf blower connected to an Ablenet environmental control unit and Ablenet switches to launch a ball—a simple yet thrilling experience made possible by assistive technology. The pride on their faces as they successfully activated the devices, coupled with the joy and excitement from families watching their children thrive, made it truly unforgettable.\r\n\r\nWith the generous support of the Bezos Family Foundation, students at JFK School in Newark, NJ were also able to participate in additional adaptive activities such as bowling, playing horseshoes with peers, and enjoying a game of soccer using a PVC-lever device. These experiences not only encouraged physical engagement but also created lasting memories of inclusion and accomplishment for each student.\r\n\r\nThanks to your kindness and dedication to our learners, this event was a milestone in showcasing their growth, resilience, and capability. The Accessibility Fair was a celebration of their achievements and a testament to the power of accessible education.\r\n\r\nA quote from a parent, \"I didn't know what to expect when I was invited. It was a heartwarming experience to see my son smile and laugh as he launched a ball into the air and heard it hit the target. Thank you for filling this mom's heart with pride in the skills my child has accomplished.\"","fullyFundedDate":1747149819832,"projectUrl":"project/empowerment-field-day-fun-accessible-a/9309750/","projectTitle":"Empowerment Field Day: Fun, Accessible Activities for All Abilities!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Van Houten","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10011471"},{"teacherId":8933514,"projectId":9095390,"letterContent":"The project you have help fund has been a game changer for my students this year. It was our 4th season of Sled hockey and the past three years we have had to borrow jerseys from another organization and the students were carrying their equipment to the rink in reusable bags. This year the joy on their faces when they saw something that was their own was incredible.\r\n\r\nOne of the students in my school is legally blind and has a degenerative disease. He is not on the team, but had a dream to be a paid artist. He was able to draw three different designs and the team was able to select their logo. We paid him for his work and made his dream come true as well. For the final scrimmage of the year we got to wear our jerseys and carry the equipment into the rink in our new hockey bags. \r\n\r\nWe won our 1st game ever the first time we wore our jerseys and are eternally grateful for you generous donations. We look forward to wearing the jerseys and using the bags for seasons to come and truly look unified as a team. Thank you again for everything.
