I even have students take the extra breakfasts that we have left and eat them, too. These kids are so thankful and I know it takes a worry away from them. One of our current projects focuses on teaching emotional identification and coping strategies. During these lessons, students often choose items like fidget tools, breathing cards, or weighted objects to help keep their bodies calm while we learn together.\r\n\r\nRecently, a student who struggles with anxiety came in visibly upset after a difficult morning. She immediately gravitated toward our new sensory corner, chose a visual breathing board, and practiced the techniques we've been working on. After a few minutes, she said, \"This actually helps. Because of you, our shelves are now stocked with deodorant, socks, chapstick, feminine products, snacks, and other essentials that so many of our students might otherwise go without.\r\n\r\nWhen we first introduced Project H.U.G., students' reactions spoke volumes. Some were hesitant, unsure if they were really allowed to take what they needed. But once they understood this space was created out of love, respect, and dignity, the relief was clear. I saw shoulders relax, smiles spread, and a new sense of confidence as they left with the items they needed. One student slipped a pair of new socks into her backpack and whispered, \"Thank you.\" Another quietly picked up feminine products she had been too embarrassed to ask for elsewhere—walking away with a sense of reassurance and privacy that she deserved all along.\r\n\r\nThe impact on learning has been immediate. When students no longer have to worry about hunger, hygiene, or comfort, they can finally focus on academics and friendships. One child who had often stayed home out of discomfort came in proudly after visiting Project H.U.G., freshly cared for and ready to participate fully in class. Another, who had avoided group activities, began joining in once she felt secure knowing she could take the products she needed discreetly whenever necessary. These moments may appear small, but for our students they are life-changing—and they ripple outward, building self-esteem, improving attendance, and creating a stronger sense of belonging in our school.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher and librarian, I am grateful not only for the tangible resources this project has provided but also for the message it sends: that every child in our building is seen, valued, and deserving of care. Having snacks available ensures that a rumbling stomach doesn't interfere with a reading lesson. Having hygiene items available prevents embarrassment that might overshadow a science activity. Having feminine products on hand ensures that no student has to miss learning time or feel anxious about their body's natural needs. These are the invisible barriers to learning that your generosity has helped remove.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, the next step for Project H.U.G. is to keep this space sustainable and responsive to our students' needs. We are already seeing which items are most in demand and are working to keep those shelves replenished. We hope to expand by adding more comfort items—such as hairbrushes, lotion, or even small notebooks for journaling—while continuing to provide the core necessities. More importantly, we will keep building the culture of compassion that Project H.U.G. represents, reminding students that their well-being matters every bit as much as their academics.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of every student who has walked into our judgment-free space with worry and walked out with dignity, confidence, and relief, thank you. The STEAM resources you provided have brought energy, creativity, and curiosity into our library. In a school where resources are limited and opportunities can sometimes feel out of reach, your support has made the difference between simply talking about science, technology, engineering, art, and math—and actually doing it.\r\n\r\nThis order could not have come at a better time. Over the summer, our school was relocated after structural damage was discovered during an HVAC upgrade. Sadly, many of our library's books and supplies were lost to humidity, moisture, and mold. It was heartbreaking to imagine starting the year with so little. The STEAM items you funded, however, made it safely through the move. When we opened the boxes in our new space, it felt like a fresh start—a spark of hope and possibility during an otherwise uncertain time. These materials have quickly become a cornerstone in rebuilding our library program.\r\n\r\nWhen the resources first arrived, my students' reactions were priceless. Eyes widened, smiles spread, and there was a collective buzz of excitement as they unpacked boxes filled with robotics kits, building sets, and creative tools. Many of my students had never had access to these kinds of materials before. To them, it felt like they were opening treasure chests filled with possibilities. One student whispered, \"We get to use this? In the library?\" That sense of surprise and gratitude has stayed with them, and it fuels the enthusiasm they bring to each project.\r\n\r\nAlready, we've been able to dive into projects that give students authentic problem-solving experiences. One of the first challenges we introduced was a bridge-building activity using engineering kits. Students worked in small teams to design and test structures strong enough to hold weight. At first, there were plenty of collapsed bridges and frustrated sighs, but soon those moments turned into problem-solving discussions, adjustments, and triumphant cheers when the designs finally held up. Through this process, students learned not just about balance and weight distribution, but also about perseverance, collaboration, and creative thinking.\r\n\r\nAnother highlight has been introducing robotics and coding. For many students, this was their first time seeing how computer programming connects with physical movement. Watching them program a robot to move across the floor was magical—students crowded around, clapping and cheering when it worked, then quickly brainstorming new ideas for what they could make it do next. These lessons aren't only about coding; they are about breaking down complex problems into smaller steps, testing ideas, and building confidence in problem-solving.\r\n\r\nThe impact extends beyond the individual projects. Our library has become a hub of innovation where students feel safe to take risks and explore. For students who may not see themselves as \"good at reading\" or \"good at math,\" STEAM provides a chance to shine in new ways. One reluctant reader found her voice as a leader in a group engineering task, confidently guiding her team through design improvements. Another student who struggles with focus in traditional lessons was completely absorbed in coding a robot, demonstrating persistence and attention to detail that surprised even him. These experiences are building confidence, sparking curiosity, and encouraging a love for learning.\r\n\r\nNext steps for our students include expanding these projects into larger, cross-curricular challenges. We are planning a \"STEAM Showcase\" where students will design, test, and present their creations to classmates and families. They will be applying math skills to measure and calculate, writing skills to explain their process, and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively. The materials you provided are not one-time tools; they will continue to support ongoing lessons where students can explore, experiment, and discover new passions.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has truly ignited a love for STEAM in our underserved library. These materials made it safely through a difficult transition, arrived at exactly the right time, and have transformed both our new space and our students' outlooks. This project provided the books and resources we needed to pair younger students with older \"reading buddies,\" creating a partnership that is both academically meaningful and socially rewarding. Without your support, this mentorship program would have been only a dream, but now it is a vibrant reality in our school.\r\n\r\nThe books you helped bring into our library are doing so much more than filling shelves. They are teaching students how to listen attentively, retell stories, identify characters, and build vocabulary. Younger students are gaining early literacy skills like phonemic awareness, sight word recognition, and fluency as they read aloud with their buddies. At the same time, older students are practicing leadership and coaching skills as they help their partners make predictions, ask questions, and connect text to their own experiences. These moments are teaching responsibility, empathy, and confidence—skills that go far beyond literacy and reach into every part of their lives.\r\n\r\nReading in our school now looks like shared joy and collaboration. On mentorship days, the library hums with excitement as pairs of students gather with their chosen books. You can see younger children's eyes widen when they decode a tricky word with their buddy's help, and older students beam with pride as they realize they are making a difference. Some pairs like to curl up in a quiet corner and read together, while others enjoy animated storytelling, complete with voices and gestures. What used to be a challenge for many reluctant readers has become something they look forward to, because reading now feels like a shared adventure.\r\n\r\nSeveral students in particular stand out. One second grader who often avoided reading time because of frustration has flourished in this program. Paired with a caring fifth-grade buddy, he now reads with more confidence and even volunteers to read aloud in class—something he never would have done before. On the other side, one of our fifth graders, who was often shy and hesitant to take on leadership roles, has embraced her new role as a mentor. She not only guides her buddy through reading but also models patience and encouragement, and this confidence is spilling over into her other academic areas. These examples are just two of many, but they show how powerful this program has been for both \"little readers\" and \"big buddies.\"\r\n\r\nBecause of the resources you provided, I've been able to accomplish teaching goals that extend far beyond one grade level. I can now introduce authentic reading experiences that foster fluency, comprehension, and collaboration simultaneously. The program has also strengthened our school community by connecting students across grade levels. Younger students look up to their buddies as role models, while older students discover the pride that comes from giving back. This sense of community has created a ripple effect—students are more engaged, more confident, and more connected to one another.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has given us more than just books. It has given us a program that empowers students to become teachers, nurtures a love of reading, and creates bonds that inspire confidence and compassion. Over the summer, our school was relocated after structural damage was discovered during an HVAC upgrade. In the process, the entire library collection was devastated—humidity and moisture warped hundreds of books, and mold made them unusable. If it were not for this project being funded, we would have started the school year with no books at all. The shelves that once held treasured stories for our students sat empty, and it was heartbreaking to imagine welcoming children back to school without the gift of literature. Your support changed that story. Because of you, my students walked into a library that still promised wonder, adventure, and belonging.\r\n\r\nThe new books you provided have not only replenished our shelves but also renewed our spirits. For many of my students, this is their first time seeing a library filled with stories that both reflect their identities and introduce them to new worlds. They are learning skills such as making predictions, analyzing characters, identifying themes, and drawing connections between text and life. With nonfiction, they are practicing research strategies and note-taking. With fiction, they are exploring elements like symbolism, foreshadowing, and author's craft. These lessons aren't abstract anymore—they're alive because we have engaging, relevant books to bring them to life.\r\n\r\nReading in our library has taken on a new rhythm since the arrival of these books. Students gather in small groups to share a novel, lean in to listen during read-alouds, and eagerly swap recommendations with friends. Independent reading has become a joyful time rather than a struggle, because students finally have access to titles that match their interests and abilities. Book clubs are now thriving, giving students a chance to collaborate, debate ideas respectfully, and build confidence in their voices. None of this would have been possible if we had started the year with empty shelves.\r\n\r\nThe stories of individual students highlight just how transformative this project has been. One quiet third grader who once resisted reading found a graphic novel in our new collection and now can't wait for library time—he even brings books home and has started writing his own comics. A fifth grader who often felt unchallenged by limited choices now has novels that push her thinking, and she has stepped into a leadership role by guiding younger students in book discussions. Struggling readers who previously avoided books are now drawn to vibrant, high-interest stories that invite them in and build their confidence page by page.\r\n\r\nBeyond literacy, these books are teaching empathy and perspective. My students are asking bigger questions about fairness, kindness, and justice. They are beginning to see that books are not only entertainment but also windows and mirrors—mirrors that reflect their lives and windows that open them to the lives of others. That is the true heart of this project: creating compassionate, curious, and thoughtful readers.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has truly helped begin to rebuild more than a library—it has rebuilt joy, hope, and opportunity for our students. At a moment when we could have started the year with nothing, you gave us everything we needed to ignite young minds and open hearts.
