Each week, about 50 students stop in to pick up snacks. For many of them, these snacks help fill a real gap—especially since about one out of every three students in our school is living at or below the poverty level. What may seem like a small item to some can mean a student is able to focus in class because they are no longer hungry.\r\nIn addition to weekly snacks, we provide weekend food bags for 13 students who may not have reliable access to food at home. Students are able to come in and \"shop\" for themselves, choosing non-perishable items they can take home for the weekend. Giving them the ability to select what they need helps them feel respected and empowered while also supporting their families.\r\nOne moment that really stood out happened just before a recent long holiday weekend. One of our students came in to shop for food and quietly asked if we had any shirts. She shared that her family is currently homeless and living in a motel room, and her mom has to do laundry in the bathtub. I had brought in some clothes that once belonged to my daughter, and when I offered them to her, she was incredibly grateful and happy to take them home. Moments like that remind us how important the Care Closet is for our students.\r\nWhen students first see the Care Closet and realize the items are there for them, their reactions are priceless. Many arrive a little shy or unsure at first, but once they understand that they are welcome to take what they need, their faces light up. The smiles we see when they pick out snacks or food for their families make it clear how meaningful these resources are to them. It's not just about food or clothing—it's about students feeling cared for and supported\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we plan to continue expanding the Care Closet so we can meet more of our students' needs. Our goal is to keep the shelves stocked with snacks for the weekly visitors and maintain the weekend food bags for students who rely on them. We are also working on organizing items in a way that allows students to \"shop\" with dignity and independence.\r\nThe continued support from donors makes it possible for us to ensure that students' basic needs are met so they can focus on learning, building relationships, and succeeding in school. Every contribution helps create a safe and supportive environment where our students know someone cares about them.\r\n\r\nI can't thank you enough for your support. It means so much to me and so much more to our students.","fullyFundedDate":1769112316752,"projectUrl":"project/the-falcons-nest-ensuring-no-student-i/10029963/","projectTitle":"The Falcon’s Nest: Ensuring No Student Is Grounded by Hunger","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Williams","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9409340"},{"teacherId":9409340,"projectId":9948290,"letterContent":"I am incredibly grateful for your generosity in fulfilling our DonorsChoose project. Because of you, we have begun using the items you purchased in our school-wide Care Closet, and they are already making a meaningful difference in the lives of our students.\r\n\r\nEach Monday morning, students who are experiencing homelessness — including those living in local motels and shelters — as well as students facing food insecurity, come to our room to take enough snacks to help them get through the week. Your donation helps ensure they start their week with one less worry and the reassurance that someone cares about them.\r\n\r\nWe have also had nine students come on a weekly basis to receive a weekend bag filled with food to help support them and their siblings. Watching students quietly select what they need, often expressing gratitude or relief, is a powerful reminder of how important this support truly is.\r\n\r\nWhen the items first arrived, the excitement was immediate — not just from me, but from the other teachers and students who help organize and distribute items for our Care Closet. We also have a group of seven boys who come to our room every morning. These students have experienced significant challenges in their young lives — one is in foster care, another lost his father to violence, and others are navigating very difficult home situations.\r\n\r\nThey come to our room each morning for consistency, care, and connection. We make sure their homework is completed, they play games and socialize with one another, and when personal challenges arise, we help them talk through their feelings and problem-solve in healthy ways. This social-emotional learning (SEL) support reminds them that they have a group of caring adults at school who are always here for them, no matter what.\r\n\r\nYour generosity goes far beyond the items themselves. You are providing dignity, stability, and hope to children who need it most.
