The day the phonics letter boards arrived, my students' eyes lit up—they couldn't wait to start using the boards. We turned our first lesson into a \"Word Building Challenge,\" and students eagerly worked together to create CVC words, stretch out sounds, and blend them to read. It was amazing to see their confidence grow in real time as they realized, \"I can do this!\"\r\n\r\nSince then, we've been using the boards daily during our small-group phonics lessons. They've become an essential hands-on tool for practicing spelling patterns, decoding new words, and reinforcing phonemic awareness. Even my most reluctant readers are now excited to participate because the boards make learning feel like play.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using these boards to strengthen spelling and writing skills. We'll be moving into long vowel patterns and word families soon, and the letter boards will help students visually and kinesthetically connect sounds to print as they progress toward becoming confident, fluent readers.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make this possible. Your kindness has truly brought joy, engagement, and growth to our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1757392553850,"projectUrl":"project/from-letters-to-words-phonics-boards-to/9664983/","projectTitle":"From Letters to Words: Phonics Boards to Boost Reading Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sargent","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9972317"},{"teacherId":3738650,"projectId":9545524,"letterContent":"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you from the bottom of my heart for funding our classroom project. Your generosity has made such a meaningful difference for my students, and I want to share with you the impact your donation has had on their daily learning and social-emotional growth.\r\n\r\nWhen the new materials and resources arrived, the excitement in the room was unforgettable. My students' faces lit up as they opened the boxes to discover the new markers, crayons, and colored pencils. \r\n\r\nThe impact of the calm area with the bean bag chair has been powerful. For many of my students, managing big feelings during the school day can be difficult. Having a designated calm space equipped with a comfortable bean bag has given them a safe, welcoming place to take a break, regulate their emotions, and return to learning ready to focus. I've seen students who previously struggled to re-enter the classroom after becoming upset now use the calm area effectively and independently. Instead of losing long stretches of learning time, they are able to reset in just a few minutes and then return with confidence. This has not only supported their emotional growth but has also made our classroom environment calmer and more positive for everyone.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has shown my students that their education matters and that there are people in the world who believe in them. On behalf of my class, I want to say thank you again for making this possible. It is exactly what my students needed to sit comfortably on the floor during whole group lessons! It is the perfect size, which I was a bit concerned about at first because I thought it would be too big to allow me to continue setting up my student desks the same way. The rug has proven to be a perfect fit. It is also very useful to have numbered spots, so if and when the time comes that I have to assign a seat to a student who is having a hard time making safe or responsible choices, I can use the visual boundaries already provided on the rug to have the child sit in their numbered hexagon. I am so incredibly thankful for this rug and will continue to care for it and use it for years to come!","fullyFundedDate":1750207029533,"projectUrl":"project/kindergarteners-need-a-rug-for-floor-lea/9417836/","projectTitle":"Kindergarteners Need a Rug for Floor Learning!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Dion","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1878197_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1550610415906","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/a-dion"},{"teacherId":3738650,"projectId":9545347,"letterContent":"My students are making tremendous strides in their reading journeys, thanks to the phonics boards funded through this project. These boards are being used daily in our resource room alongside the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) reading program, which is the foundation of our structured literacy instruction. Having the phonics boards available has given my students a hands-on, interactive way to connect with the lessons we are learning, and the results have been inspiring.\r\n\r\nWhen the phonics boards first arrived, the students' excitement was immediate. Their eyes lit up as they explored the boards, moving the pieces around, experimenting with letters, and forming words on their own. What struck me most was how quickly they gravitated toward them, almost instinctively knowing these were tools that would help them learn in a way that felt fun and engaging. The students loved the tactile experience, and many commented on how \"cool\" it was to have something that looked and felt like a game but was actually helping them become stronger readers.\r\n\r\nIn the resource room, we often work with students who need extra support and practice to develop their literacy skills. The UFLI program is highly effective, but what makes it come alive for students are tools like these phonics boards. They allow my students to manipulate sounds and letters in a concrete way, reinforcing the phonemic awareness and phonics patterns we are studying. For example, during a recent lesson on short vowel sounds, students used the boards to build words such as \"cat,\" \"hop,\" and \"sun.\" Being able to physically move the letters into place helped them recognize patterns, blend sounds, and self-correct when needed. This multisensory component has been especially impactful for students who struggle with traditional pencil-and-paper activities.\r\n\r\nThe boards have also given my students a sense of independence and confidence. Instead of waiting for me to confirm whether they spelled a word correctly, they can now use the boards to test out possibilities and make discoveries on their own. This shift has encouraged risk-taking and persistence, two qualities that are essential for developing readers. I've noticed students are more willing to try challenging words because the boards provide a safe and supportive way to practice.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nBeyond academics, the phonics boards have created a sense of joy and ownership in the classroom. Students often ask if they can use them during choice time, and I've seen them helping each other build words, taking pride in showing their peers what they've learned. This level of engagement has a ripple effect, building motivation and fostering a positive attitude toward reading, which is often a subject that feels frustrating for struggling learners.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students are not only learning important foundational reading skills but also experiencing the joy and confidence that comes with success. These phonics boards are more than just classroom materials; they are tools of empowerment that are helping my students believe in themselves as readers. Your support has made a lasting impact, and we are so grateful for the difference you've made in our learning community.","fullyFundedDate":1755691588946,"projectUrl":"project/from-sounds-to-sentences-helping-reader/9545347/","projectTitle":"From Sounds to Sentences, Helping Readers Bloom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Trippiedi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3738650_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1501177942976","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-trippiedi"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80228","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":443,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":41,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":54,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":71.5,"schoolId":80228,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Jewett Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Jewett Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-hampshire/school-administrative-unit-37/jewett-elementary-school/80228"}
