The excitement was contagious, and students immediately began talking about which items they hoped to earn through their hard work and positive behavior.\r\n\r\nThe rewards have had a wonderful impact on our classroom culture. My students earn stamps when they demonstrate kindness, responsibility, perseverance, respect, and teamwork. Recently, I noticed several students going out of their way to help classmates and stay focused during challenging assignments. They proudly tracked their stamps and eagerly waited for their opportunity to \"shop\" at the rewards cart. One student told me that earning a prize felt special because it showed that their effort and good choices had been noticed. Moments like these remind me how powerful positive reinforcement can be in building confidence and motivation.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, the rewards cart will remain an important part of our classroom community. Students could not wait to try them out. As soon as we unpacked the boards, they began brainstorming all the different ways we could use them. Many students were especially excited about the opportunity to work while standing and moving around the classroom instead of remaining in their seats.\r\n\r\nThese whiteboards have quickly become one of the most-used tools in our classroom. Recently, during a math lesson, students worked in small groups to solve multi-step word problems. Instead of completing their work independently on paper, they gathered around the whiteboards, discussing strategies, drawing models, and explaining their thinking to one another. I watched students confidently share ideas, ask questions, and revise their work together. The boards created a space where every student could contribute and be part of the problem-solving process.\r\n\r\nWe have also used the boards during science investigations, reading discussions, and writing lessons. Students enjoy using them to organize information, collect data, record evidence from texts, and share their thinking with classmates. The opportunity to move, collaborate, and actively participate has increased engagement and enthusiasm across all subject areas.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened when a student who is often hesitant to share answers in whole-group discussions eagerly stepped up to explain his group's work at a whiteboard. Working alongside his peers gave him the confidence to contribute, and it was wonderful to see him take pride in his learning.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our school year, students will be using these whiteboards during collaborative science investigations, literature discussions, and problem-based learning activities. We are currently exploring how scientists collect and analyze data, and the boards are helping students organize observations, identify patterns, and communicate their findings. Instead of one or two of the same group of students participating – all students are engaged in the learning process. \n\tThe white boards that were so graciously donated have shifted the focus from teacher-led instruction to student centered, active thinking and collaboration. The boards are the most critical tool in the framework of a Thinking Building Classroom. The boards are specifically designed to stand vertically and are on a non-permanent surface. The design is to ensure that students’ thinking is visible, encourages collaboration, and reduces anxiety. The boards have become a shared space that occupies one shared marker encouraging the groups to talk and collectively share their ideas. \n\tThe minute the boards arrived our class took off with the concept. We use the boards almost daily. The way it works is students immediately grab their boards and find a place within the classroom. I will present a task for the groups to problem solve while students stand at their boards. The group discussions start immediately. At any point you will hear student’s say, “Let’s try, I love that idea, I agree, but let try another way, how should we model this idea, can you explain how you came up with that idea.” Math talk has become enriched. The student with the marker starts writing, drawing, creating models, and erasing (if need be) to solve the problem. While students are working, I will walk around to ask questions, to engage in their ideas and find ways where they can expand their knowledge in hopes of leading them to new insights. At the end we come together as a group to collaborate and consolidate our ideas. I will often ask what patterns we see within our ideas, ask who would like to explain a group’s idea. We will try to make connections to real world concepts. \n\nEver since the boards have arrived there is a buzz in the air. Each student feels like they are a part of the problem solving experience and each day feels like a new experience.
