They've already made a noticeable difference in how my classroom feels and functions.\r\n\r\nI teach newcomer English learners, many of whom are just beginning to read in English. These reading intervention books are helping us build foundational skills—things like recognizing high-frequency words, decoding unfamiliar vocabulary, and developing confidence when reading aloud. We're also working on comprehension strategies like identifying the main idea, using context clues, and asking questions while we read. For many of my students, this is the first time they're experiencing success with reading in English, and that confidence is everything.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is very interactive. We don't just sit quietly and read—we read together, we talk about what we're reading, we annotate, we act things out, and we connect it to our own lives. My students need language practice just as much as they need content, so every book becomes an opportunity to build speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills all at once.\r\n\r\nThe geography and encyclopedia books have been a game changer for my U.S. History class. My students are able to see visuals, maps, and real-world connections that make abstract concepts much more concrete. Instead of just hearing about places and events, they can explore them. It's helped them feel more included and capable in a subject that can otherwise feel overwhelming in a new language.\r\n\r\nI have several students who now go straight to the bookshelf when they finish their work—something that definitely didn't happen before. One of my newcomers, who was very hesitant to read out loud at the beginning of the year, now volunteers to read during small group time. Another student loves flipping through the encyclopedia to find pictures and facts about places we're studying, then proudly shares them with the class.\r\n\r\nThese books aren't just resources—they're opening doors for my students. Thank you for helping make that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1767992693651,"projectUrl":"project/building-history-and-literacy-for-englis/9987017/","projectTitle":"Building History and Literacy for English Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Vargas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7783365"},{"teacherId":9356995,"projectId":10015255,"letterContent":"Students loved the hands on project. The Scribe tablet has allowed students to access reading materials, annotate texts, and organize their ideas in a way that makes learning more interactive and engaging. Many students feel more confident participating in lessons when they can easily track their thoughts and revisit notes.\r\n\r\nThe snacks you provided help students stay focused and energized throughout the school day. For many students, having a small snack available during class removes a barrier to learning and helps them concentrate on reading, writing, and discussion instead of hunger.\r\n\r\nThe fidget tools have also made a noticeable difference. Some students concentrate better when they have something small to occupy their hands, and these tools help them manage stress and stay engaged during longer lessons or discussions. They support a classroom environment where all students can regulate their attention and participate more effectively.\r\n\r\nTogether, these resources help create a more supportive, focused, and inclusive learning environment. In our self-contained high school life skills classroom, many students experience big emotions but may not yet have the communication skills to express them appropriately. These new books allow us to introduce important lessons about recognizing emotions, managing frustration, understanding others' feelings, and practicing calming strategies. Through guided reading, discussion, and visuals, students are learning how to identify feelings like anger, anxiety, and excitement, and more importantly, what they can do when those feelings become overwhelming.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks a little different than a traditional classroom. Many of my students are working on functional communication and comprehension skills, so we often read together as a group. We pause to talk about pictures, act out feelings, and practice coping strategies we see in the stories. Some students use visuals, gestures, or short verbal responses to participate. These books give us meaningful opportunities to practice real-life skills such as taking a deep breath, asking for a break, or recognizing how someone else might feel in a situation.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have already connected strongly with the stories. One student in particular enjoys pointing out the different emotions characters are experiencing and practices labeling those feelings during our discussions. Another student who struggles with transitions has begun recognizing calming strategies we read about in the books and is starting to try them during difficult moments. Seeing students make these connections between stories and their own emotions has been incredibly powerful.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has helped create a classroom environment where students can learn not just academics, but also the emotional skills they need to succeed in school, work, and life. Thank you for supporting our students and helping them grow.","fullyFundedDate":1767981176086,"projectUrl":"project/supporting-big-feelings-through-social-e/9986545/","projectTitle":"Supporting Big Feelings Through Social-Emotional Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cruthirds","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9583513_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741121052985","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9583513"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_83010","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1402,"numTeachers":62,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":5,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"22.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":59.5,"schoolId":83010,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Elko High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Elko High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/nevada/elko-county-school-district/elko-high-school/83010"}
