Your donation has made a bigger difference than you may realize!\r\n\r\nMy Design and Modeling students use the brooms and dustpans after every building activity to clean their work areas. During our cardboard projects, small pieces of cardboard, paper, and other materials can end up on the floor. Now, students are responsible for sweeping and cleaning their own areas before leaving the classroom. Our classroom floor is much cleaner, and students are learning that being a good designer also means taking care of their workspace.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new brooms and dustpans, they were excited to have something they could use to help clean the classroom. Some students even told me they were learning how to sweep because they don't usually sweep at home! It was a simple moment, but it showed me that they were learning an important life skill along with their engineering skills.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building and testing our engineering projects. Students will use the same teamwork and responsibility they have practiced during our building activities as they work on new designs. During a recent lab, student teams were tasked with designing their own turbine blades to see who could generate the highest voltage. One group tried three different blade shapes without much luck, but after adjusting the blade angles on the hub, their multimeter reading finally jumped up. Watching them figure out the mechanics on their own and celebrate when the meter went up was a great moment. They were directly applying concepts like kinetic energy and aerodynamics through trial and error.\r\n\r\nNext up, the students will be taking their designs a step further. They are going to test how their turbines perform under different conditions, like varying wind speeds and angles. They will collect that data, create graphs to track efficiency, and ultimately put together a small presentation on how wind energy could be used on our school grounds. They were especially drawn to the 32 piece carabiner set. Having professional grade clips made the project feel real and high stakes rather than just a craft.
