The resources I am requesting for my classroom will promote the Nevada Academic Content Standard ELA 10.1; demonstrate turn-taking in conversations and group discussions. Teaching students with emotional disabilities offers the opportunity to think outside of the box with my teaching practices. One of the biggest challenges my students face is their ability to communicate socially and academically. Integrating art and SEL games helps break down their social barriers by creating a learning environment where students feel safe to share their thoughts and support each others learning. The donations to this project will help increase student engagement in reading and writing by allowing creative forms of expressing thoughts and ideas about a text through art integration. It will also help students build stronger relationships with their peers. Playing a social emotional learning game creates an experience where students can become familiar with each other and learn about their strengths and weaknesses developing a positive classroom community. In times of stress, students utilize cool down strategies to calm down throughout the school day. Having a an area with comfortable seating gives students a calm space to take deep breaths and bring their stress levels down. Mindfulness coloring books help students get their mind off of a stressful situation which add quality to the cool down area.
