As you will see in the pictures, students were able to use the information gained from reading this novel to do a variety of activities. \r\n\r\nStudents built background knowledge by reading about the 12 labors of the mythological Hercules. We read the novel as a class, independently, and with partners. Students completed reflection questions in their journal to track their reading comprehension and to make text connections. The class worked in small groups to \"crack the code\" using the 12 labors of Hercules riddles. Students created mental images, a reading comprehension strategy, of important events in the novel. An author's study and critique of the novel were completed after finishing the book. Students then used the Hero's Journey format to write their own mythological narrative story or graphic novel. On average, students gave this book 4.5 stars!!!!","fullyFundedDate":1744231903684,"projectUrl":"project/not-your-average-hero/9202760/","projectTitle":"Not Your Average Hero!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Keffeler","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7924199_orig.jpg?crop=612,612,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1706821180973","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7924199"},{"teacherId":7924199,"projectId":8754190,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for contributing to the learning of my student by funding this project. The \"Buffalo Song\" books were a wonderful enrichment to my Montana History Unit in my 6th grade Social Studies classes. \r\n\r\nI read this beautiful, true story to my class as students followed along. It was very helpful to have a copy for each student. Students then answered some reflection questions, connecting the events in the story to other knowledge about the buffalo in Montana. Student viewed 2 video about the importance of the buffalo to Montana's Indigenous people. One video, \"Restoring An Icon\", refered to the actual events from \"Buffalo Song.\" Students then create an \"I Am\" poem from the perspective of the buffalo using details from the story, the Afterword of the book, and the videos. To include an Art Integration component, student learned how to draw a buffalo, and created an image to accompany their poems. Students then shared their poems with their peers.
