We are also researching how each part of the bird body works and why they have those specific characteristics. \r\n\r\nMy kids are so engaged and the books have been such a treat! First, I unpacked the boxes and let all the students see all the books they had access to during our WIN (what I need) time. I read some of the titles to get them excited about reading \"real\" books. Next, I let the students look at the books and the pictures for a few minutes each day. During this time, I had to align the books with the phonics program we use for intervention. \r\n\r\nAfter I finished aligning the books, I started choosing books for the students to read as practice opportunities on the skills we were working on. We read books in our intervention group in a systematic and explicit way. First, I read the book to the students while they two finger tracked (to use both sides of the brain). Then we decoded the words and then read them \"the fast way\". Then an \"expert\" would read the sentence the fast way. The students all had a chance to be an expert with my support if needed. \r\n \r\nThe kindergarteners could not believe they were \"reading\". The simple act of offering these small everyday items means so much more, it helps to build the emotional and mental foundation they need to thrive in school and in life.\r\n Our students were excited to pick out a brush, comb, and toothbrush. Beyond the items themselves, your donation serves as a reminder to our students that they all belong to a giving community. It sends a message of hope and solidarity, showing that the community stands behind them. This contribution plays a vital role in making our school a more inclusive, supportive environment where every student regardless of their background has the tools they need to succeed. \r\n The Family Resource Center is more than just a place of support for students and families, it is a community. In the program, students have a decodable passage at the end of each lesson. They read the passage and draw a picture to illustrate the story. These passages provide good fluency practice for my students, but it's just not the same as having a real book with pictures that they can pick up and read independently. \r\n When we received our new books, my first graders were just finishing up with practicing the short vowels in CVC words. I brought out the book Ten Hens and their eyes lit up! They were so excited! We read the book together, then I let them read some of the other short vowel books independently with a partner. They didn't want to leave when it was time to go back to class! When we started working on reading words with consonant blends, the kids were excited to move up to the next bin. Seeing them get so excited about reading books is so heartwarming! \r\n Your book donation has made an impact on my K, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade reading groups. Being able to read books independently helps improve not only their excitement, but their self-confidence in reading.
