In science, we have been learning about simple machines but the K'Nex Kits have given my students the opportunity to build levers, pulleys, and many other machines that use gears. One of the most rewarding moments was when students began working in groups to create complex machines that combined all of these basic ideas. My 4th graders' creations mirrored the beginning of Rube Goldberg machines. I have been asked countless times to let them add more to their machines. They absolutely love it! Students will continue to use these tools to demonstrate understanding and mastery of science concepts. \r\n\r\nWe have been using the Building Blocks and Magnetic Building Sticks to explore terms in math like: area and perimeter. Students were presented with both materials and asked to demonstrate the difference in these ideas. The classroom was immediately filled with \"Well area is... and perimeter is... so we should...\" The verbal feedback was music to my ears because the students could explain the ideas but watching them experiment and struggle with trial and error in their demonstrations was irreplaceable. Learning was happening. The magnetic sticks showed shapes with only the perimeter highlighted, legos became arrays, and surface area was easily explored on 3-dimensional shapes. By the end of the lesson they understood the difference between the two, how to find each, and how to discuss their ideas with peers. Some students even tried to explain the difference to our high needs/lower learning students showing mastery and understanding.","fullyFundedDate":1733177228417,"projectUrl":"project/stem-building-supplies-new-4th-grade-sci/8804607/","projectTitle":"STEM Building Supplies-New 4th Grade Science Teacher","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McMaster","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9766454"},{"teacherId":2456547,"projectId":8732865,"letterContent":"I am a new librarian as of this year. I taught 5th grade for 10 years and switched to middle school librarian this year. It has been quite an exciting change. The new resources supplied by you made a huge impact on myself and the students It helped ease my transition into the library as well as added new activities to the library. Libraries are no longer just for reading. They are creative spaces to grow minds in new and exciting ways. Our library has an amazing maker space. Your resources added new projects to the maker space. \r\nNow that I have been a librarian for 4 months, I have noticed libraries serve many functions. They supply research and resources to the students and staff, they offer a quiet space for those in need, and they encourage learning outside the box. The resources that I received from Donors Choose helped our library perform all of these functions. The students were excited to see the new projects. They could visit the library (with teachers' permission) and learn in a different way. I feel these supplies gave brain breaks to students and teachers alike.\r\nOne of the activities will be introduced during I LOVE TO READ week. As I mentioned before, libraries are changing by adding makers' spaces, however my goal is to encourage reading. It is a known fact that reading does not only make you live longer, but allow you live a happier and healthier life. For I LOVE TO READ week, our maker's space will offer a screen printing activity. Each student can screen print a tote bag with a book stencil. I am looking forward to this week.","fullyFundedDate":1726255736774,"projectUrl":"project/middle-school-maker-space/8732865/","projectTitle":"Middle School Maker Space","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Long","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2456547"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_106178","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":174,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":35,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":87,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"4 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.3,"schoolId":106178,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Frenchtown Intermediate School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Frenchtown Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/frenchtown-school-district-40/frenchtown-intermediate-school/106178"}
