Because many of my students come from families who are first-time immigrants from Honduras, Venezuela, and Peru, having books in both English and Spanish allows them to bridge their home language with new learning. This not only strengthens their confidence as readers but also supports family involvement. Each week, students take home leveled book bags so they can practice reading with their families, creating a powerful connection between school and home while promoting a love of literacy beyond the classroom.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, joyful, and student-centered. Students get to choose their take-home books each week (see pictures). Some of my emerging bilingual students light up when they recognize familiar words in Spanish and then make connections to English, while others are excitedly taking on the role of \"teacher\" at home when they read their take-home books to siblings and parents. One student who was initially hesitant to participate, and without books at home, now eagerly chooses bilingual books. These books are tools that empower my students to see themselves as capable readers and to share that joy with their families.","fullyFundedDate":1699906113259,"projectUrl":"project/bilingual-books-for-young-readers/7970730/","projectTitle":"Bilingual Books for Young Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Walker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4969529_orig.jpg?crop=485,485,x269,y121&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692069827845","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/claire-walker"},{"teacherId":4969529,"projectId":9838041,"letterContent":"In our 1st grade classroom, these printers have played an important role in making our learning environment more visual, engaging, and meaningful for these young learners. I use the Fuji INSTAX Mini Link printer to create instant \"Polaroid-style\" photos of my students that we incorporate into art projects, classroom jobs, and bulletin boards. Seeing their own faces displayed around the room helps students feel a sense of belonging and ownership in our classroom community. Alongside this, the full color printer allows me to create clear, vibrant visuals that support early reading skills, daily routines, and expectations. This is essential for first graders who rely heavily on visual cues as they build independence.\r\n\r\nThe color printer also brings learning to life in a way that black-and-white simply can't—whether it's colorful reading visuals, class coupons they earn for completing their reading logs, or social-emotional learning posters that show detailed facial expressions and body language cues. These visuals help students better understand emotions, expectations, and academic concepts in a way that feels accessible and engaging.\r\n\r\nI've noticed that I've been more creative and flexible with these tools in my classroom. I can print posters to collaborate with my colleges (ex. \"Let's teach the -au spelling pattern along with the -aw spelling pattern on Monday. I'll use Chat GPT and print a poster to replicate the style and new patters as our reading curriculum\" - Me on Friday March 27th). These tools help create a classroom where students can see themselves, understand expectations, and teachers feel excited to prepare for their teaching every day.","fullyFundedDate":1766967151712,"projectUrl":"project/learning-in-color/9838041/","projectTitle":"Learning in Color","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Walker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4969529_orig.jpg?crop=485,485,x269,y121&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692069827845","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/claire-walker"},{"teacherId":3018651,"projectId":9911017,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for taking the time to donate to our classroom! Thanks to your generosity we've been able to keep our school store running consistently throughout the rest of the school year, which has made a big difference in maintaining student engagement and positive behavior.\r\n\r\nMany of the students started setting goals for themselves and thinking about how they could earn enough school money to get something they really wanted. These moments are powerful. They are learning how to think critically, communicate clearly, and persevere when something doesn't work the first time.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful changes has been in student confidence. Instead of worrying about cold ears or dry, chapped skin, they are able to fully engage in our classroom activities and enjoy their time at school.\r\n\r\nBeyond the physical comfort, your gift sent an even more powerful message: that they are cared for.
