Through the use of literature, I plan to guide and facilitate discussions that foster critical thinking by encouraging students to make connections with the themes and form an understanding of the diverse characters of the books. Providing students the opportunity to gain insight into the lives of people from diverse backgrounds, students learn to accept, value, and appreciate people who are different than them. I chose books such as Alma and How She Got Her Name, Lovely, and Lucia the Luchadora to reflect a few of the cultures represented In my class. Having a large library of books that represent different cultures and themes, will allow students to feel welcome and connected to their community and their peers.
