Your generosity has given my students something incredibly valuable—the opportunity for every student to hold a copy of the same book in their hands, read together, discuss their thinking, and experience the joy of sharing a great story as a classroom community.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is much more than simply reading the words on a page. We work to become thoughtful, confident readers who ask questions, make connections, discuss our ideas, and support our thinking with evidence from the text. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is a wonderful text for helping us practice these important skills.\r\n\r\nAs we read the novel, students work on skills such as identifying character traits, analyzing how characters change, making inferences, determining theme, summarizing, identifying cause and effect, understanding point of view, making predictions, and using text evidence to support their thinking. We also explore new vocabulary and practice using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. The situations Peter experiences with Fudge give students many opportunities to think about relationships, responsibility, problem-solving, family dynamics, and seeing situations from another person's perspective.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Sometimes we read together as a whole class, while at other times students read with partners, in small groups, or independently. Students stop throughout their reading to annotate, ask questions, make predictions, discuss important events, and share their thinking with classmates. One of my favorite things to see is students referring back to the book to prove their ideas during our discussions. Having a class set means every student can participate fully in these experiences.\r\n\r\nThe excitement surrounding these books has been wonderful to see. Some of my students who are typically more hesitant to participate in reading discussions become eager to share their opinions about Peter, Fudge, and the situations the characters find themselves in. Students laugh together at Fudge's antics, debate what they think Peter should do, make predictions about what will happen next, and eagerly ask when we are going to read the next chapter. For some students, a funny and relatable chapter book like this can be the book that helps them begin to see themselves as someone who truly enjoys reading.\r\n\r\nYour donation also helps create an equitable reading experience. Every child has access to the same text and can follow along, reread important sections, locate evidence, and participate in conversations with their classmates. No student has to wait for a book or share a copy when they are trying to find evidence to support an idea.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, you have helped us build a community of readers. These books are helping my students strengthen essential fourth-grade literacy skills while also discovering that reading can make us laugh, think, wonder, connect, and sometimes even beg for \"just one more chapter.\"\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my students and our classroom library. Your generosity is making a meaningful difference in the way my students experience reading. This class set will continue to impact fourth-grade readers for years to come, and I am incredibly grateful that you chose to support our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1773852062353,"projectUrl":"project/let-them-read/10153012/","projectTitle":"Let them read!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sherita Ming","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7397750_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1596802737803","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7397750"},{"teacherId":9412130,"projectId":9102918,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping me provide and purchase new school supplies for my third graders.
