There were wide eyes, huge smiles, and lots of \"Is this really for us?\" They immediately began choosing spots and imagining how we would use the space. Several students ran their hands across the rug and commented on how soft it was. One student said, \"It feels like we're actually camping!\" The excitement was genuine — but what touched me most was the sense of pride. They felt special.\r\n\r\nOur new reading space has quickly become one of the most meaningful areas in our classroom. We call it \"Camp Read-A-Lot,\" and it truly feels like a little retreat within our school day. Right now, we are reading The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan together. Students take turns reading aloud while sitting in our comfortable camp chairs, arranged in a circle on the soft rug. The seating naturally creates a sense of community — everyone is close, engaged, and focused.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, sitting comfortably makes a tremendous difference. Instead of shifting in hard chairs or struggling to stay regulated, they can settle in and truly attend to the story. I've noticed longer attention spans, more participation, and richer discussions about characters and plot. Students who were once hesitant to read aloud are volunteering for turns.\r\n\r\nAfter lunch has also become a special time. The transition back to academics can be difficult for some students, but the reading area offers a calm reset. Students quietly read, decompress, or sit comfortably before the next class begins. It has transformed what used to be a restless time into a peaceful one. It wasn't just new furniture. It was a space created with them in mind.\r\n\r\nAs we continue reading The Lightning Thief, students will be diving deeper into character development, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. We are working on identifying themes, making predictions, and supporting answers with text evidence.\r\n\r\nThe \"camp\" setting has made the novel come alive. We talk about quests, challenges, and perseverance — all themes that resonate with my students in powerful ways. They are beginning to see themselves in the characters' journeys. Moving forward, we plan to incorporate small group discussions, creative response activities, and possibly a \"campfire reflection\" day where students share what they've learned from Percy's adventures.\r\n\r\nThis space has become more than a reading corner. It is a place where students feel calm, connected, and confident. Because of our donor, reading now feels like something to look forward to — not something to get through.","fullyFundedDate":1771103563240,"projectUrl":"project/camp-read-a-lot-a-cozy-literacy-corner/10097584/","projectTitle":"Camp Read-A-Lot: A Cozy Literacy Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10434839"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_76572","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":738,"numTeachers":51,"percentFrplEligible":63,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"14.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":72.0,"schoolId":76572,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Poplar Bluff Junior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Poplar Bluff Junior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/poplar-bluff-school-district-r1/poplar-bluff-junior-high-school/76572"}
