I wanted a personal mail box for my students to be able to learn independence with having a mail box of their own. I had to make adjustments because the mailbox unit I wanted was unavailable, but the 12 drawer rolling cart worked just as well. I had originally wanted to use this cart for their snacks, but I think because it's so versatile, using it for the name books is perfect as well!\r\n I was able to get it put together and labeled for their name books. I did have to pivot, because it was funded at the end of summer, and I wanted to use the items for my graduating students, but, the items that were in this project were able to be used for my incoming students. I was able to make fun \"welcome back\" goodie bags for them.\r\nWhen my students began arriving, they were each given a bag full of educational, and fun items to be used as needed. \r\nThe water bottles will be put to good use after recess, without having to wait in line for the water fountain. I keep the pop-tarts and other snack items in a storage drawer where the students can come help themselves if they are feeling a little hungry. With the bins, I was able to add the supplies, and labels and have them ready for my new students.\r\nOnce my new students did arrive, we took a tour of the classroom, and talked about the storage bins and how to use them.\r\nThe students were able to see the labels, and see the toys inside the bins to be independent enough to put things back when they were finished playing. The previous students had left for summer before it was funded, so I had to pivot with my original ideas! I have students in my room with varying abilities, and my goal is to see that they all succeed, and feel capable of doing anything. \r\n\r\nThis project contained workbooks called \"error free\", and that's just what these books help teach my students. An example would be instructions that state: \"Put the toys in the bedroom\", with a picture of a bedroom, and pictures of toys that the students can attach to the bedroom. \r\n\r\nAnother item included in this project were our \"question of the day\" questions. I learned a long time ago how fun gardening can be for my little students, and ever since then, I try to implement it into my learning. So, when my gardening project got funded, I knew the adventures would continue! \r\nWhen the boxes arrived, some of my students knew it was for our classroom, but they didn't know what was in them, because these boxes were fairly big. After a group conversation and what's what, we opened the boxes and, the students were so eager to get right to work helping put the garden beds together and getting them outside and prepared for growing! \r\nThere were enough aprons and gloves and watering cans for each student to have once we were outside. My students chose which flower and vegetable seed we should plant and we got to work. A handful of my students will be going off to their new school in the Fall, but the rest of my students, as well as my newer ones, will have an entire year to watch and be a part of the progress of our garden. \r\nThis is all thanks to wonderful, amazing donors such as yourself. Although, this was somewhat a surprise, I had been talking to the students about a new garden and what we would do if we got one, and lo and behold, we got one!\r\nThe students were so eager to help tear open the boxes and get started on putting our new garden together. I could not wait until I was able to begin making the students' books. \r\nWhen the packages came in, the students who are familiar with me participating in Donors Choose instantly asked me were there new toys for them to play with, and can they be the one to open the boxes! It's so funny to me when they know, and get just as excited as I do! I told them we would be using these materials to help make their journals a little better and easier for them to navigate. \r\nThe journals are something the students use as part of their everyday routine, which helps the students feel more independent and confident. They know what to expect when it comes to the journals.\r\nAfter we opened the materials, some of the students picked out the colors they wanted for their journals, and I began making the books. (This part they couldn't help with because I had to use the binding machine)\r\nThe books were finished in just a few days, and the students were showed the books and how to use them, and have been using them since. Some of the family members have even come in looking for the books, so they have been a win-win! It always makes me so excited and happy when I get a project funded and I can come to school and talk to my students about our newest journey!\r\nAny time a box shows up to our classroom, the students all want first dibs on opening it and seeing what's inside, so I'm very calculated on how the boxes will get opened! With this shipment of items, there were several boxes and packaging so most of the students who wanted to help open had an opportunity. And this probably sounds a little wild, but, when I tell you that the students have almost as much fun with the boxes as they do with the toys, that is not an exaggeration!\r\nI explained to the students what the items were and gave suggestions on how to use them.\r\nBecause I have a mixed age group, as well as varied abilities, I like to start slow, with me and my co-teacher taking small groups to use the materials for a selected amount of time. Each group had so much fun and creativity when playing with the playdough and the sticks and blocks. There was no item that was out of the skill range for my students\r\nThe play was endless, which was the goal with this project. My kids love the 'learn to read' books! They are amazed at the simplicity of looking at a picture, identifying it, and when I tell them \"that's the word!\" they beam so brightly. We even go on to write the words on paper so they can show their parents the word they 'read' at school.\r\nI think I'm smiling as bright as they are when it happens - and even now, writing this. And the dual language books are a big plus! Hopefully, this helps my Spanish speaking students learn English as I'm learning Spanish.\r\nJust last week, the kids were looking at books and I asked \"Will someone read a book to me?\" and oh, my gosh, everyone raised their hands. So, they all took turns 'reading' their book to me and the rest. The science equipment is doing its magic! The only time no one is looking/examining/excitedly asking questions is breakfast, lunch, or naptime - although I believe if I let them have them there, they would. \r\nSince it's usually a few girls that come early in the morning, I'm happy to say that they got ahold of the talking microscopes and had a ball looking at the specimens. Of course, I have ended up putting a time-limit on the usage so everyone has a chance AND remind the class we have other things to learn and practice. \r\nBut, it warms my heart to see them so excited to learn about the different aspects of science. The very young ones, the 3 yr olds love to look into the viewers and screaming at the bugs! Since it's only a little more than a week of school before the holiday break, we are just learning how to use and take care of our new equipment.
