One recent highlight was a real-world area and perimeter garden project, where students worked in teams to design garden layouts, calculate measurements, and justify their thinking. We also used the materials during coordinate graphing partner activities and learning walks, allowing students to move, discuss strategies, and learn from one another as they checked work and shared solutions.\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate—especially the calculators. Many students expressed relief and confidence knowing they could check their thinking independently, which encouraged them to take academic risks and stay engaged rather than shutting down when problems felt challenging.\r\nBy contributing to this project, you gave students a true glimpse of what meaningful, student-centered learning looks like in our classroom. This elective course continues into second semester, and these materials will remain a core part of instruction as students engage in more collaborative problem-solving, math strategy projects, and peer-to-peer learning experiences.
