To say that I appreciate your contributions that made it possible to purchase 175 recorders for my fifth grade music students is an understatement. \r\n\r\nI teach elementary music in a very poor area. Extra funds for non-essentials is hard to come by for our students' families. I also have a very low music classroom budget ($150 a school year to provide for over 400 students building-wide). Last school year, I returned to the music classroom after teaching fourth grade for ten years. I had taught music in my current music classroom from 2008-2015. During that time, and multiple relocations of the music room, the supplies, instruments, and music I had acquired somehow vanished. When I returned to this room last school year, I had next to nothing to work with. After multiple Donors Choose grants last school year, I built up a classroom instrument station, acquired needed music, as well as costumes for grade level music programs. \r\n\r\nMost of my students, prior to their musical education in this classroom, have never held an instrument in their hands. The recorders purchased with this grant allow all fifth graders to begin learning how to use their musical knowledge of note and rest values, as well as the lines and spaces of the treble clef staff, in a hands-on, motivational way. They also experience the unity and sense of accomplishment that comes with succeeding musically - an experience that I hope encourages them to continue their musical studies in middle and high school (and possibly beyond). Without your financial contribution, most of the 175 students now gaining a recorder to use in class would not have had the means to purchase on their own (roughly around $8-10 each). Therefore, this would have been an out-of-pocket expense for me. I would have purchased recorders for those who couldn't provide the needed funds. Therefore, not only will my students and families be appreciative of your grant funds, but I am as well.\r\n\r\nMy fifth grade students asked on the first day of school if they were going to get to play recorders this year (this is something students look forward to in our building). I let them know that we were very lucky to have received the funding to purchase each of them a recorder and that \"Recorder Karate\" (the unit I use to teach the fingering patterns and songs) would be a go! We look forward to beginning recorders late fall, after their grade level music program. They are looking forward to receiving the recorders in the mail. I want my students to see mistakes as part of learning rather than something to be afraid of.\r\n\r\nThe dry-erase markers, erasers, and wipes will allow us to make our lessons more interactive and give students frequent opportunities to actively participate instead of simply listening or completing work on paper. The desk organizer will also help create the structure and organization my students need to access materials independently and stay focused on the task at hand. My goal is for students to walk into our resource room and immediately feel that it is a place where they can take risks, ask questions, collaborate, and grow.\r\n\r\nAs the school year begins, I will introduce students to these materials and build routines that encourage independence, collaboration, and a growth mindset. My goal is for students to know from the beginning that our classroom is a safe place to recognize and communicate their emotions. During transitions, independent work, or challenging moments, students will have appropriate tools to help them regulate and refocus. The emotion plush toys and feelings book will give us opportunities to build emotional vocabulary and practice identifying feelings and coping strategies together.
