The goal of the project was to support my students with disabilities (Fed III Autism and Fed III Emotional Behavioral Disability) in building work skills and adding to their resumes while also helping the community. With your generosity, we received all the materials needed to create hygiene kits for unhoused people living at a nearby shelter. When the students saw all the materials and understood that their work was really going to matter, they were delighted.\r\n\r\nWe have now had over six \"work sessions,\" where different classrooms at my school have worked in an assembly-line fashion to build the kits. Participation has been fantastic. We've also been able to build mini-lessons around health, hygiene, mental illness, and the difficulties that unhoused people face. Several students who are often reluctant to participate in my work-skills class were really excited and engaged once they understood that their work was going to matter in the real world.\r\n\r\nAfter the project was finished, we used the experience to develop resumes for all the students. By combining this experience with some volunteer work we did at another site and a cleanup program we initiated, all my students now have a robust resume featuring three work experiences. One student was able to use this resume to apply for and earn a summer internship. Another was so encouraged by the experience that she is now spending half her days at a work site.","fullyFundedDate":1776190245214,"projectUrl":"project/community-care-work-skills-lab/10131021/","projectTitle":"Community Care: Work Skills Lab","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Andy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10456538"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_127905","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":26,"percentBlack":22,"percentWhite":20,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":8,"gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":52.7,"schoolId":127905,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about SPPS Online School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"SPPS Online School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/saint-paul-public-schools/spps-online-school/127905"}
