Academically, students are working on comprehension strategies like analyzing memoir, tracking character development, and identifying themes such as resilience, identity, and belonging. We also focus on academic language, like how authors use descriptive detail, dialogue, and structure to tell their stories.\r\n\r\nBeyond skills, these texts open the door to meaningful conversations about immigration, family separation, and perseverance. Many of my students see parts of their own experiences reflected in these stories, which helps them engage more deeply and think critically about both the text and the world around them.\r\n\r\nThese books have been especially meaningful for my multilingual learners and students who don't always see their experiences represented in school texts. I've seen students become more engaged, more willing to participate, and more confident in sharing their ideas.\r\n\r\nOne student, who is usually very quiet, began opening up during discussions about The Distance Between Us, making thoughtful connections and even asking to read ahead. Others have expressed how much it means to read stories that feel \"real\" to them. Seeing students feel seen, and realizing their stories matter, has been one of the most powerful outcomes of bringing these books into our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1770938450341,"projectUrl":"project/bridging-the-distance-through-reading/10092037/","projectTitle":"Bridging the Distance Through Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lange","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4818817_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1506025657445","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4818817"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_63338","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1088,"numTeachers":53,"percentFrplEligible":33,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":55,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.6,"schoolId":63338,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Falcon Ridge Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Falcon Ridge Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/rosemount-apple-vly-eagan-196/falcon-ridge-middle-school/63338"}
