The students were extremely excited about their book choices for their historical fiction literature circles—many commented that the texts were more modern and engaging, which made our readers more engaged throughout the unit. \r\n\r\nIn their final reflections, several students shared how much they enjoyed the books. One student commented that they enjoyed the book \"Between Shades of Grey\" because, \"It was so good I truly enjoyed it, it showed me a side of history that I didn't even know had so many twists I loved it.\" Another student noted they enjoyed \"Projekt 1065\" because it was \"really interesting and made you wanna keep reading.\" For some of our reluctant readers, the impact was even more meaningful. One student admitted, \"even though i do not like to read i liked this book becuase of non-stop action\" referring to \"Ground Zero\". This drama has been a part of our curriculum since I began working in this district, and the books were in dire need of replacement. Sections of the book were coming loose from the binding, and the covers were falling off. These books don't go home with students since it is read in class, but naturally over time, their use damages the books.\r\n\r\nThis is a powerful story that shows a different perspective than some of our students. This is a key standard in Minnesota English Language Arts curriculum, and our department strives to do our best to showcase as many perspectives as we can. Students get to work on showing expression when they read out loud this drama, and there are several serious conversations about language, stereotypes, racism, and hardships that students remember long after they leave the classroom. The index cards will greatly help with presentations, speeches, and other classroom activities. For instance, the larger index cards are used for aphoristic sentences from a short story we read in class. They draw something to represent that sentence and share with the class.\r\n\r\nThe pencils are already at use. Having pencils for students makes our job significantly easier. Yes, many students have pencils, but as we all know, they can easily run out of lead, break, or go missing. Having extras on hand ensures that we don't have to slow down or change what we do because of students not having these essential parts of education.
