Reading is a constant struggle for many students. In today's digital world, students learn in different ways -- more from images than print, more from participating than passively absorbing information. These students avoid traditional texts consisting of only prose, generally considering them "boring," unable to apply them to their lives. One of my goals in any literature course is to encourage students to "dig in" and relate to literature, however many students struggle to relate to printed words on page. By reading non-traditional texts, like graphic novels, readers learn to decode images as well as text. Graphic novels provide readers with content that will entertain and engage them and hopefully create life-long readers.
