When I first found out I was teaching in a windowless room this year, I was worried. I didn't want my students to feel depressed or disengaged about being in an uninspired learning environment. The fluorescent lights were glaring and awful, especially first thing in the morning!\r\n\r\nBecause of your donation, I was able to order floor lamps and twinkle lights with warm lighting, so we don't use the overhead lights. That alone has a huge impact on my students' ability to self-regulate and focus. In addition, I was able to order soft, colorful floor seating to create a reading nook. Many of my students struggle with anxiety or emotional regulation and they ask to use the reading nook to take a break. I also ordered young adult novels and comics based on student recommendation. They were so excited to see the books they requested arrive. \r\n\r\nWhen I first entered my new classroom at the beginning of the school year, I never could have imagined how lovely the space would become. There were lots of oohs and aahs as we opened packages. We were very excited during mail delivery. \r\n Our next steps are to incorporate the calming materials into our daily routine. My students are working very hard to learn self regulation strategies as they mature. We are using these techniques to learn how to communicate our needs in an age appropriate manner in high school and in our community.","fullyFundedDate":1724201262727,"projectUrl":"project/so-emo-social-emotional-retreat/8677170/","projectTitle":"So-Emo (Social Emotional) Retreat","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Karrie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9568444_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y735&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725756864169","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-karriemueller"},{"teacherId":9782336,"projectId":8834916,"letterContent":"Students in our Special Ed programs have diverse and various needs. These headphones allow them to do a couple of really important things. \r\n\r\nThe first thing is that they are able to use them to listen to music or just block out some quieter classroom sounds during individual work times. We are a \"no phones out in class\" school, so the headphones allow everyone to connect to their Chromebooks. They are also an equalizer so that not only students who can afford their own headphones have this opportunity, but it is available to everyone, with the same equipment. For students who are neurodivergent or have mental health issues, it is especially important to be able to create a more private space in a crowded classroom. We are appreciative that the Google Mental health initiative came through for us. \r\n\r\nAnother thing that the headphones are very useful for is listening to audiobooks. We try to have audiobooks available for all the titles that we study in English. Some students just prefer it and some students really need that option because of disability or skill. With headphones, students can listen at their own paces, pausing to take notes or rewinding to listen again. Additionally, some of the texts that we study touch on difficult or uncomfortable topics and it can be better for students to be listening on their own, rather than hearing a character use offensive language as a class. The privacy of the headphones makes it more like regular reading and less like someone has brought that situation into our classroom space.","fullyFundedDate":1726609892253,"projectUrl":"project/headphones-and-tote-for-9th-graders/8793779/","projectTitle":"Headphones and Tote for 9th Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hollerich","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7676542"},{"teacherId":9783777,"projectId":8839366,"letterContent":"Thank you for your donations of noise canceling headphones, coloring books and pencils, and bookmarks. The advantage of simple noise cancelling headphones is that they do not require power, they simply create a physical barrier to block external sounds which allows students to focus on reading, taking tests or working on projects. It is like swimming under water where all of the sounds are blocked and students can concentrate on their task at hand in peace. \r\n\r\nThe coloring books, pencils and bookmarks provide an outlet for students who want to relax and unwind during their school day. We have a specific place in our library where students can go to take a break and the coloring books help them to center themselves.
