I have gentrified our nonfiction section to make the books more accessible for the kids. The kids can look at photo and word on bin and dig through the bins to find whatever book they are interested in. Before, they only saw the small spine and nonfiction hasn't been checked out. \r\nIt also has allowed them to independently find other interests. I moved the animals and the dinosaur books (which now are out of order of the dewey system) closer to our picture books because there is never enough of those books for all the interests at the Kindergarten and 1st grade level and now they can access them much more easily. \r\nIt is still a work in progress. I am going to categorize more and have general themes for easy access with signage. I will still have the dewey numbers on the bins for easy shelving - but, I do not teach that anymore. They like to look at the photos and search for themselves. \r\nSince using the bins to genrefy, circulations of nonfiction books is up 20% from last year's total nonfiction circulation. Your donation has been so helpful in the organization of our classroom. These are, by far, the most used donations yet! \r\n\r\nMy favorite item is the label maker. We've labeled water bottles, winter coats and hats and mittens, extra clothing, folders so they can be reused, mailboxes...so many things in our classroom are clearly labeled now, it's been wonderful.\r\n\r\nWe also use the colored tape in many areas of our room.
