In the past 10 years, close to 800 students have used our classroom set of historical fiction books as a part of their social studies curriculum. These books were needing to be replaced in order to continue this tradition. Soldier's Heart, a historical fiction book by Gary Paulsen, follows the story of a MN Civil War soldier. While reading the book, students also immerse themselves in the story by \"becoming\" a union soldier. Using information from the MN Historical Society, they complete a number of activities as their soldier, one of which is writing a letter back home to their family as that soldier. We also take pictures as the soldier, eat beans & drink coffee, share our stories, and many different primary and secondary sources. Reading a book that has the perspective of a young soldier helps to make the Civil War more than just a topic in history. It makes it relevant to their lives as they develop empathy and compassion for the struggles that others have gone through. Thanks so much to the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation for helping to support this project as it is a favorite of my students every year!","fullyFundedDate":1778590737171,"projectUrl":"project/soldiers-heart-learning-about-the-civi/10276309/","projectTitle":"Soldier's Heart: Learning About the Civil War Through Historical Fiction","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jennifer Tjaden","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10503631"},{"teacherId":9606093,"projectId":10233830,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping bring these new books into our fourth-grade classrooms! This project supported all four fourth-grade classrooms, giving each classroom a copy of every title. Having access to the same collection of books across the grade level has opened up so many opportunities for students to discover new authors, genres, characters, and perspectives. Students have been excited to browse the new books, recommend favorites to their classmates, and find stories that they may not have picked up on their own. It has been especially fun to hear students talking about what they are reading and encouraging their friends to try a book they enjoyed.\r\n\r\nThese books are also helping us teach important reading skills in a way that feels meaningful to students. As we read, students practice making predictions, summarizing, determining the main idea and theme, making connections, using evidence from the text, building vocabulary, and thinking about characters and their choices. Reading in our classrooms looks different throughout the day. Sometimes students read independently and quietly, while other times they read the same book as a small group or participate in conversations about their thinking. Having multiple copies of each title means teachers across the fourth grade can use these books for book clubs, small-group instruction, partner reading, and shared discussions.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts has been seeing students who don't always consider themselves \"readers\" find a book that pulls them in. Some students immediately gravitate toward certain titles, while others need a little encouragement or a recommendation from a friend. Once they find the right book, we often see them become much more engaged and eager to talk about what they are reading. Your generosity has helped us create more opportunities for those moments across all four fourth-grade classrooms. Thank you for giving our students new Maud Hart Lovelace nominee stories to explore, new perspectives to consider, and more reasons to see themselves as readers!","fullyFundedDate":1779309800579,"projectUrl":"project/expanding-young-readers-worlds-with-awa/10233830/","projectTitle":"Expanding Young Readers’ Worlds With Award-Winning Chapter Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wollin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9606093"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_74467","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":592,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":17,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":94,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"17.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":27.3,"schoolId":74467,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hawley Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hawley Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/minnesota/hawley-independent-school-district-150/hawley-elementary-school/74467"}
