We have used the PocketLab sensors in multiple investigations, and will continue to do so through the end of the school year. These sensors graph data in real time, eliminating the need for manual compilation of data, which can feel tedious to the students. In turn, this allows more time to focus on observing, analyzing, and design adjustments without feeling rushed.\r\n\r\nA few descriptions of how we have used the sensors are listed below:\r\n\r\nInertia and momentum - We attached sensors to spinning chairs and the students collected data on how mass affects momentum and how air resistance affects momentum.\r\n\r\nParachute Drop - The students designed parachutes with various materials and attached sensors to collect data on the drop. They measured how mass affects the acceleration, how height affects whether or not the object reaches terminal velocity, and how more surface area affects acceleration.\r\n\r\nCrash Cushion Design - The students designed crash test cushions with straws and other materials. They used cars and tracks with the sensors attached to the cars and their crash test cushion attached to the \"wall\" at the end of the track. I was so impressed with all the different models they designed!\r\n\r\nAside from specific physics concepts, the students have developed proficiency and are on their way to mastery in identifying scientific variables, interpreting graphs, analyzing data, and writing thoughtful and effective conclusions. \r\n\r\nWe cannot thank you enough for your generosity. Every time we get the sensors out to use, I remind the students that we have this technology because of their parents and a few other donors.
